Ghosts-

Post by Jayway »

Well, LLL. This is a very interesting post and I will eagerly await replies - I wonder if anyone has done the "HAUNTED HOUSES Tour" they have in England ? I always meant to go but went pot-holing instead - - ;)

No, I'm afraid I don't believe in ghosts. I'm the complete rationalist. :) I know that the "evidence of my senses" can be altered, by alcohol, by drugs (legal of course), by hunger, stress or illness and lack of sleep. If I ever "saw" something supernatural I woud probably rush off for a thermometer to check for fever! The human mind is much stranger and more interesting than supernatural explanations.

I believe that shifts in our reality do occur, wether we notice them as often as they do occur is another thing. Something trivial like an object or possesion not being where you thought it was and not having an explanation as to how it got where you found it. these kind of events may be put down to forgetfulness in human terms.

Have I seen a ghost..? Yes, quite a few, but I never saw them as ghosts, they were real to me at the time. Not only people..

I will share a couple of these experiences in this topic a bit later on tonight.

I'm in Morgita's camp on this one, I tend to think that everything has a rational explanation if we care to look for it. Having said that, I don't suppose I would want to be in certain places on my own as I would find them a bit erie, now why would that be?

Jay, where did you go potholing? I could tell you a spooky tale involving potholing :) :urm:

No I do not believe in Ghosts and do not believe 'ghost' are the spirit of a dead person.
I'm not discounting there is something as most of us will have seen something even if it is just for one second.
I think most of us must of had the experience of 'something' saying your name behind you, to turn and see no one there.......and we know something said our name, don't we?
When I was a child I decided those peculiar things we catch out of the corner of our eye are a swift glimpse of another dimension, perhaps another world that we are unable to see running alongside ours. That theory kept me from looking under my bed and listening for creaking doors.

I like JOJO' explanation, you are not seeing the dead..

I guess that for me, I have always questioned the world, ever since I could think. I had many strange experiences from a very young age.

Whether or not one chooses to believe that our life is not what we think it is, you then have to also realise that neither is time.
I have my beliefs on that matter..

I did as a very young child, about 18 months old, spend time with an old lady who was in a bed, she wore black and had a black woolen bed cap, just like the old Victorians would wear. I would spend time standing at the side of her bed, she had to look down to see me.
My mum would ask what I was looking at, so I would tell her.. It didn't go down too well..
What I realised was though, she could not have been where she was, as the bed would simply not fit in that space, so where was I ?

I spoke to a few people in the house, Mum could tell by where I was looking at as to how tall the person was. my mother saw none of them, but said there was a strange but not unpleasant feeling in the room whenever that happened.

I had other experience's of a different nature too in that house and since, quite a surreal upbringing really :?

They are some of my life's most vivid memories too, I can remember the slightest details that I cant remember in other thoughts or memories.

The dream state is a very interesting one too, like hypnosis. The mind I can assure you is very powerful.

Horus, what would your rational explanation for your apprehension about visiting certain places alone be ? Prior knowledge of some tragic incident at that place ?

Tell us the spooky pot holing story Horus, I love that sort of stuff. :)

Every Christmas my Mum brings up the story of when we couldn't get into my bedroom.
I was about 12 and I was ordered to get my Pyjamas on during a commercial break of a programme I was glued to, I did alot of arguing until my Dad got up and chased me towards the stairs shouting "get those bloody jamas on now or you can stop upstairs......
Trundling and cursing I partially opened the door but something was pushing it back towards me, this tooing and throwing lasted for a few more seconds until I bellowed downstairs that I couldn't get in my room!
Eventually my Dad flew upstairs to fling me in my bedroom and he had the same problem, he opened it 1/2 way and something pushed it back....As the colour faded from my Dads face I did that cocky shrug of the shoulders and grin "Told you so"!
Being a bit of a wimp my Dad had alittle coughing fit and ordered me back downstairs. Apparently he took my mum to oneside and asked her to check for an open window in my room.
It was a few years later that my Mum brought up the subject and how it had frightened my Dad to death. :)

Not believing in ghosts I actually believe it could of been mind over matter, I was in such a strop and I was adamant I wasn't going into that room to put my pyjamas on ....and I didn't?

I recall a story of two Scotsmen living alone up in the highlands, each night they would scare each other half to death with ghost stories :)

Then one night, just as they were about to put the willies up each other ..................

You naughty person you! I guess one might have been Big Willie and the other Little Willie. Perhaps they hesitated in order to avoid disappointment all round.
Don't encourage me, I've just returned from a pub quiz with the mandatory one over the odds! And yes, we won. A crappy bottle of wine that will go well on our chips but who cares? A win's a win.

I do not believe in ghosts in that I don't believe in the TV type versions of dead people coming back as 'ghosts'. Can't believe in that one - BUT does the spirit or essence of the person still exist after death? Yeah.

In the Hindu religion when a person dies they believe the spirit is released from the human body and begins a year long journey to another life or existence. When the person first dies their spirit is somewhat confused and as they lie in their coffin waiting for burial if there are children' present (and believe me there are LOTS of children present ALL THE TIME) these children are manually lifted and passed back and forth over the coffin (wooden box but we'd call it a coffin) so as to confuse the spirit of the dead person. If this does not happen there is a fear that this dead person will enter the body/soul of a child. The passing of the children back and forth over the dead body is meant to confuse the spirit and force them onto their journey and discourage it from hanging around.

That tidbit aside I do believe in extra sensory perceptions. I've had 'em and they were REALLY REAL. They are essentially unexplainable and there is no rational reason for them having happened but they have happened to me - mostly along the line of just KNOWING something beyond a shadow of a doubt that I did not personal witness or experience. Just a sudden complete knowledge of something pertinant to another person.

I can completely understand BillH's experiences of seeing somebody. This I would not call 'seeing a ghost' I would call this an extra sensory perception that is real (and it IS real).

Now H - I wanna hear the pothole stories too! ;););)

Sorry LLL, that last one was for Horus. I promise I'll return to the subject tomorrow when my 13 year old self is back in the bottle. Alcohol reduces me to childhood. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Anyway it's all that Horus's fault, "Ben Doon and Phil McRevis" cracks me up completely!

Is that not "Ben Doon" and "Phil McCavity"? ;)

But about ghosts......I do believe that there are spirits of the dead as they pass over to the next life and can visit you for sure on their transition ...then there are "hungry ghosts" which are found in many religions and these are spirits with unresolved karma unable to satisfy their longings.....they can actually be living like people who, despite having many material possessions/relationships are never fully satisfied always seeking something else - insatiable, this is a result of past experiences/lives/unresolved karma, a bit like the "dementors" in harry potter.
We visited a few "haunted" castles in Scotland this year........amazing places :)

;);) 'tis ok Morgita - I figured it! You were experiencing "sprits"!! ;););) And yea - Ben Doon 'n all! ;) Guess they were both wearing kilts and sporns too! ;)

Jewel - interesting points. The Hindu people actually 'fed' the soul (I should be saying soul instead of spirit) for 5 days to give it strength to make its year long journey. After 5 days they no longer feed it 'cause they do not want it to continue to hang around. It MUST leave and start it's journey. The family of the deceased will have NO ceremonies of any kind for the next year either so as to not encourage the soul to come back to celebrate with them. Weddings are cancelled and all manner of events are put on hold.

It is also believed that IF the family of origin is around and close at the time of death then the soul stands a greater chance of coming back to reincarnate into that same family and this is very important to the family to know. They also believe that the soul of a grandparent, great grandparent can be reincarnated in one of their children so in this respect Hindu children are greatly honoured by their parents.

Reincarnation.. 8)

Damned handy sometimes..

Christians wrote that out of the bible back in 620 AD and classed it as heresy, too many of the flock deciding not to repent in the present life..

Horus I'm sure the one of the Scot's guy's name was was Phil McRakcen..
Please tell me the Scots guys wasn't your Pot Holing story... :P
