Who knew that Roman ruin was there?? Certainly not me! I hadn't a clue - and it would have been so close to where we were staying too! Thanks, Kiya! You've surpassed yourself with this set of photos! :up

Thank you all :)

20TH JUNE cont....... After visiting the Roman ruins we came back to Faro to one of the cafe's at the bay & had the

biggest dish of ice-cream I could have :)

We continued around the marina to the neoclassical ARCO da VILLA gate set in the ancient Moorish city wall that takes

you into the old Faro 9467 check the massive stork nests at the top of the villa.

You notice the much narrowed cobbled streets some you couldn't get a car through 9468

9469 some pics are taken at random 9470

The bell tower part of the old church 9471 9473 9472

This is the old city town hall 9474

Once upon a time most of all old Faro homes would have looked like this, very small one storey 9476

9477 We didn't venture to far in as we manage to get lost on a couple of occasions before this so

we returned the way we came in 9478 9480

An ancient brewery set behind the old city wall 9481

I should have had the plaque at the beginning of post as it is set just inside the gateway 9479

Not just here but around Faro's many squares you can see lovely designs like these 9483

Later we sat at the square & joined with the locals to watch some of the Portugal footy 9484 this girl

tried her best to do the balancing act with the Portuguese flag 9485

Kiya you may be interested to know that your plaque (very roughly translated by me) would seem to be commemorating a party that was held in 1249 to celebrate the integration of ‘the land of Santa Maria De Faro’ into the Portuguese nation and that plaque is the 7th anniversary of that particular event in 1949.

Super interesting and I especially love the churches with the huge bells! Am always fascinated by churches and their designs and what gets incorporated into them and what doesn't. Always really interesting to me.

RS...ok I thought there may have been a connection to Portugal when you said your DIL is doing a quilt in that design :)

LLL... all the churches are beautiful to see, there must have been so much working hours put into them with design & build :)

Kiya that design is quite common and used in lots of places, it is not unique to Portugal. Take a look at all of these quilt designs using that motif, I just cannot imagine the complexity of making something like that (or indeed any quilt :) )

23RD JUNE.... A beautiful sunset 9495 and on the 24TH JUNE 9496

The last few days I was really tired with being ill if someone had offered me an early flight home I think I would have

taken it.

The last days was just resting and having a walk into the centre when cooler for dinner and a bit more

shopping, there are so many streets and shops you were really spoiled for choice :)

I mentioned already David's pet hate of not catering for the English language on menu's at cafe's, restaurant's, bars

and historical places of interest, but we did get by :)

My pet hate was all the cobbled pavements and roads ( except the main roads in and out of the city ) they were awful,

some pavements having big humps in different places, no reason at all for it, I couldn't get to wear my new sandals

and relied on my good old loafers :)

After all would I go back to Faro.....Yes I would, I think there is probably a lot more places of interest to find :) and

so came 26TH JUNE day of departure, an early start for 8 AM flight, getting into position 9497

picking up speed down the runway ( I just love this part of flights ) 9498 and we have lift off

9499 9500 leaving Faro far behind us.

I really hope you all have enjoyed sharing our experiences of Faro with us :) :)

Kiya I have just worked my way through your excellent report of places visited on your holiday in Portugal. And well done to you even when not feeling too good. :up I know just how long it takes to do all the picture sizing and uploads and thanks for your patience in bringing your trip to life for us.

I know you have a soft spot for Canterbury Cathedral so here is another image of a compass rose from the floor of the cathedral. Maybe you will get to see it someday. ;) :up
