That sounds worse than over here in the UK! God knows, we suffer, but get there eventually. I don't blame you going over the border with medical records like that!

That bad LLL? From my own personal experience our NHS is so much better than that. There are many things wrong with the NHS and we do have published instances when things are less than expected but overall it is a service that works.
In fact people who have private healthcare can often get better and faster treatment by the NHS. I certainly have a lot to thank them for :up

I would just add that you do sometimes have to push for what you want.

Here our medical revolves on the "line up" system and nothing moves faster than a long slow line. You wait for a machine (i.e. CT Scan) for years here. There is, IMO, absolutely NO reason anybody should have to wait more than a week for an ultrasound, two weeks for a CT Scan or MRI. Our Gov't has explained to us here that we don't NEED any more medical equipment always throwing in "the waits are not too bad" but ?? Many die waiting for treatment and the "RULE" is - if you miss you appointment (which sometimes means you have to hang for over a year waiting to get the call so your entire life is on hold) no other appointment will be scheduled for you OR if there is you go to the end of the line again and wait more. This means you can't schedule anything else you can't cancel to make your medical appointment.

There are approximately 800,000 on the whole Island and we all share a couple of machines. If you need cancer treatment that involves you getting on a weekly basis to Victoria which is the southern most end (and then you also actually have to get through the downtown area which is always a total crush of people) to the cancer clinic. If I had to do it the drive would take me 2 hours on good roads in the summer. Winter I'm not sure I could drive over the mountain known as Malahat to get to Victoria. Lots of people live much further north than I do so a 4 hour drive in one direction is nothing.

Lots of people here if they are diagnosed with something serious do opt to go to the States for treatment and often, particularly with children, there are charities set up to collect $$ so they can afford to go to the USA.

On another note once you get to the top of the line and you can get there IF you collapse as my father did the treatment you get is pretty good. We have no specialist surgeons just general surgeons and they do do their best. Oncologists are rare as hens teeth as are most other specialties. Absolutely nothing that isn't essential is even considered. Nothing is elective.

That is appalling LLL, no wonder you went to the States for treatment.

We thought Barry had good NHS treatment in 2006 when he was taken ill, although it took a year to get a diagnosis with the delays between tests & results & appointments. Later when he was last told he needed a routine blood test he was told the appointment with the nurse would be in 3 weeks & the results a month later, he didn't bother!

Now that we are in France we are amazed at the difference. A GP appointment is usually same day, unless you ask late afternoon when it might be the next morning if it isn't urgent. You can phone & speak to the Doctor Mon - Fri at 4.30 & yes she does speak English :) For a blood test the nurse comes to the house the next day.

Amazingly when Barry had an infection following a biopsy he rang the GP who sent him to a local hospital, he only had to wait 20 minutes to be seen by the casualty Doctor. The Doctor he saw there sent a report to the consultant in Poitiers who then rang and asked why Barry hadn't phoned him direct, (he was quite hurt) In the UK you wouldn't contemplate phoning a consultant but here apparently it is the norm. When Barry was in hospital the consultant came round at least once every day in person, he didn't just send a locum.

The waiting lists are virtually non existent here. The other thing that is different here is that whole families go in together and the consultant asked me if I had any questions as well. Yes you do have to pay a contribution (30%) towards the cost but most serious or permanent conditions are covered 100%.

Last year I opted to take the daughter to the ER (her husband stayed home with the kids so they could all sleep) as she was in lots of pain. She hadn't been feeling well but everything went south and although it was her initial plan to wait 'til morning she just couldn't. I took her to ER at 9pm and she was finally seen by a Doctor at 4am. Turned out she had shingles! She was only 37 so wasn't anything any of even thought she might have.

Your healthcare there sounds quite like it should be. It is less than adequate here and many people here are not even able to get a family doctor or GP. About 90% of our Doctors are coming here from South Africa although my second to last was from Iraq. The daughter's family doctor is from a spanish speaking country (not sure which one).

On another note re: Today - this morning the daughter and granddaughter came over for a cuppa. Picked quite a few bags of lettuce and delivered to some of the neighbours. Lettuce is growing great guns right now. Went this afternoon to look at a big wood carving but didn't get it. This afternoon I sorted and washed a whole bunch of fabric for quilts for the 3 grandkids for Christmas. Figured I might as well start on this now. Quite a nice evening here. Weather is sunny and getting warm. By the end of this weekend weather here should be HOT!

Not done very much today. Started with my Saturday morning trip for the newspaper. Neither of us can read it so we just get Saturdays for the TV guide supplement.
I have still been finally tweaking the new TV and soundbar. I have had one or two pairing problems but they are now sorted, I hope. We watched a wildlife program this evening in ultra HD with cinema sound. Best picture and sound ever in my house. :up

At this moment I am home alone. My wife had a clinic appointment at 09.40 for an eye injection and our son in law offered to do the taxi job. The clinic is about 9 miles away and very difficult to get to. :xx

Fathers Day so a few cards and bottles will arrive during the day. :up

Much to my surprise, I'm pretty much on schedule for a Big Day Sorting Paperwork. :up

I must admit that mistakenly getting up at 5.45 am instead of 6.45 am helped. ;)

Good looking photos from your outing even though you didn't come across anything alive and moving and exciting to take a picture of. I have those days too when I don't see a living thing.

I'm planning and plotting as to HOW I can get the City guys to cut down ONE of the big trees out back. If any one of them came down I'd get a superb view of the marsh and many many more photos of all the birds out there. Right now I can only get peek-a-boo shots between the leaves and half the time the camera is focusing on the trees vs the birds. Not sure how I'll get them to take down a tree but have been thinking on it since I moved in a few years ago.

Did you go the entire trip on your scooter? And if 'yes' how did it handle? Battery use? And - are the tires hard rubber? Is there a chance you can get a flat (and if so do you carry a spare tire?)

Ever since you got one I've noticed more and more people are here with them up to and including one fellow yesterday quite quickly zipping through a major intersection with cars coming off the highway! He was really chancing that a car driver would actually SEE him as usually they're looking for cars coming down the Parkway (aka the name for our Island Highway).

Good to know you're getting out and I quite enjoyed your photos :)

@LovelyLadyLux
LLL, I wasn't quite sure what pictures you were talking about? It is two weeks since I went anywhere AND took some pictures. But to answer your questions:
I really do enjoy riding the scooter because to walk anywhere is very difficult even with a walking stick. It is just a pavement scooter, as I think I have said before, with a speed of about 4 mph, or maybe a little more. It has very small ground clearance so I have to make sure there are dropped curbs to cross roads. Fortunately it is policy here to provide dropped curbs everywhere for the benefit of scooters and mums with prams and buggies.
The tyres are solid and the ride can be a bit bumpy if the surface is not too smooth.
The manufacturers claim up to 13 miles on full charge but that is under ideal conditions. My guess is that it should be good for 8 miles with my 17 stones.
Don't forget that I selected this particular model because we can break it down into 4 components to carry in a car boot.

I had posted this before. Just 3 wheels for easy maneuverability and less space in car boot.

PS: I don't use that 'Noddy basket'

Okee dokee - I FOUND what I saw!! Normally when I log on I go to the last page (which is where the laptop auto opens) except THIS one opened PAGE 1!! (of this What are you doing today? thread)

I scrolled to the bottom where on JAN 16 (which I read as Jun 16th so figured it was you) 2016 you wrote:

Quite a bright sunny morning so I got off my backside and went to the nearby RSPB National Nature Reserve. It is about 7 miles from my home and mostly along the narrowest of country lanes. Mrs G finds such outings boring, no M & S or John Lewis along the way, so I went solo and with some limited mobility her last words were 'Don't fall in'. :tk
Most of the countryside is looking very barren at the moment and the reserve is no exception. Even the wildlife had deserted so not one picture of a Marsh Harrier or a Bittern this morning. Having made the trip I HAD to record some images and here are those that I kept. There is a 'scrape' at the Grove Ferry end of the reserve and it would probably have been better to go there where there would at least be some waders.

This is the map of the reserve that is about 2.5 miles long from Stodmarsh to Grove Ferry.

This is a reed bed along the path from the car park to the Reedbed Hide. The path was cleaner than I expected after recent rain.
7268
View from one of the Reedbed Hide windows, not a feather to be seen. By this time it had clouded over.
7269
This is the path towards Tower Hide but some people told me there was nothing there either, so I went back to the car park.
7270
At the car park there are toilets and a little shelter where you can sit to change your footware. A chalkboard is there for anyone to record their sightings, only one Elephant and one Tiger so far this year.
7271
On the way home along the lane I did just stop to take a pic of Higham Farm nestled in the countryside. By this time I was desperate to take a picture of anything whether it moved or not. :(

I read it saw Jayway "liked" it and thought to myself WOW you've definitely decided to go for a jaunt!! AND I thought maybe you were teasing or testing us that you'd gotten a bigger and better scooter cause I couldn't figure how you were cruising a park on your own with the camera BUT again I thought you'd maybe gotten something bigger and better and it even FIT that Mrs G said "Don't FALL IN!" !!!!!

Sooooooo - the mystery solved as to WHY I thought you were off and jaunting to a park 7 miles away! ;) (And here I was thinking you were going to announced you got a bigger and better more road worthy machine!)

:))) :))) :))) at ME!

Good for you Ruby! Have a lovely time, hope it won't be too hot and no rain.

I'm trying not to finish my paperwork which should have been done two day ago. I have a few excuses, but really it's laziness. then I can check the stuff for the charity which should go on either Monday or Tuesday. There's quite a lot, I hope they can take it all in one go.

OK - I thought Horse Races too BUT heading out to a Quilt show would be FANTASTIC! (I'm cutting out fabric to make 2 quilts for the twins right now)

Today, right now, I'm waiting for the daughter to arrive with the crew as we're going to head to the swimming pool. Rained lightly last night which was nice and this morning is bright sun.

Right now and for the past couple of months our downtown has been taken over by hundreds of homeless demanding they get 'free homes.' They're living in tents everywhere and since they seem to regularly vandalize any 'facilities' put them for them to use bathrooms are au natural in nature. Needles are everywhere, thieving is rampant so I haven't been downtown for a walk for quite some time. Just not safe and I truly do not want the hassle of coming back to my car to find the windows smashed which is also happening regularly as they search for anything. Police are making arrests but nobody is held here for more than a few hours so there is little deterrent to being arrested.

One couple who came to court about 10 days ago had over 30 charges pending and the Judge gave them 2 months probation - nothing which has angered quite a significant percentage of the population. Vigilantism has now started particularly amongst the Construction guys who have had tools stolen. They've started massing together and then going to FIND their tools.

We've also had quite a few people lately just 'go missing.' An elderly lady this past spring picking mushrooms, a dad whose car was found still running on the side of the road and he just disappeared. Two other campers (both men) just gone. Several teen girls - quite a few just 'missing' so more and more conversation is going that we have Somebody on the prowl around here........sooooo I haven't been taking too many walks.

I agree Ruby a bit unsettling to say the least.

I've just had a stroke of luck the Red Cross turned up to collect the donation of stuff my daughter doesn't need. I was expecting them tomorrow or Tuesday - the lovely chap who collected shook his head and grinned and said "They know in the office I only work weekends" I guess it's not the first time it's happened ;)

Now I'm working on my email to the licensing authority with reference to the Deli behind us having their drinks licence extended on Saturdays until 10.30pm. Interesting because I thought they already did! I'm objecting on H&S grounds as there is only one narrow access which is usually blocked because trying to park around here is a nightmare. It would also be difficult to evacuate a crowd of celebrating drinkers. I have said that the Deli is first class, but the outside area is not suitable for late drinking hours and Events.

The area concerned is about 20 ft from my back door, maybe a bit less. Last week there was a barbecue belching smoke as well which was right against the fence. Not neighbourly.
