Did you know?

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

We all learned in school that water goes down a drain clockwise in the northern hemisphere and just the opposite in the southern hemisphere. See for yourself below. EQUATOR LINE Interesting if you have not seen this.

There is a lot of scientific evidence to say that it does not happen due to the Earths rotation, but rather a random effect that could go either way. In perfect conditions it would happen and is known as the Coriolis effect, the same thing that makes a tornado rotate differently in each hemisphere. But the best brains on this subject will tell you that in normal conditions the Coriolis effect has no influence on the direction as that force is far too weak to influence the rotaion of water and it is more likely to be influenced by eddy currents in the water from when it was filled, even changes in air pressure and variations in the plug hole shape and minute flaws on the edge will have more influence over the direction it rotates, so basically, it can go either way unless the test is done under laboritory conditions. :)
