In Flanders Fields
John McCrae, 1872 - 1918
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
In Flanders Fields

Re: In Flanders Fields
Digressing I know, but did you see the Danny Boyle inspired images in the sand? Great idea and so well created by the artists in the sand of beaches around the UK.

I must say that my grandfather and great uncle were in my thoughts over the weekend, both drowned at sea in 1914 and 1917 respectively.
RIP Grandad Fred and great uncle John........

Re: In Flanders Fields
Grandad I watched the Peter Jackson film and it was so much more hard hitting when seen in colour, it takes about 20 minutes into the program before it turns into colour, but worth the wait. He has done an amazing job of creating authentic colour and cleaning the images to a really good standard, in some you can actually hear the words the soldiers are speaking, so the soundtrack is also authentic. I believe that they did this by having expert lip readers translate what was being spoken in the silent film and then spoken by an actor, the result was that it added reality to the men in the trenches as they waited to go over the top or just trying to exist in that hell hole. The sharpened image and colour made the battle grounds so commonly seen as just a grainy black and white film into a horrific scene of dead and churned up bloodied bodies half buried in the mud and lying in the trenches along with the living soldiers, everyone should have to watch that film, especially politicians.

@Grandad - thank you for sharing the Danny Boyle clip. Very poignant as the ocean waters wash back in. Terrific idea too.

Re: In Flanders Fields
What an incredible idea! I hadn't seen this one thank you Grandad.
I was moved to tears by the efforts of artist Rob Heard. 72,396 tiny figures sewn into little shrouds and each one made in the name of an individual and then crossed off the list of those who never came home. 5 years in the making and 15,000 hours of work must have had a massive effect on the artist.
I have just watched the video clip again of the Shrouds of the Somme and when the last figure was laid on the grass I couldn't stop the tears.

Re: In Flanders Fields
Utterly amazing work of art MD. And those little figures represent less than a tenth of all who lost their lives in WWI.
MD, if you have not yet seen Peter Jacksons film They Shall Not Grow Old that Horus told us about on another thread, I recommend that you catch on BBC iplayer. It is a stunning actual video record including many of the men represented by those shrouds, actually lying dead in the mud. Hard to watch in places but it is a MUST SEE.

Thank you Grandad, I've got it earmarked, but life has been a bit emotional lately and I'm saving it for later.
