Anybody know what this is please?

Post by FABlux »

We saw this on our walk last week but just got round to posting it!

The stem looks like a normal rose but the fruit doesn't look like a rose hip & the fluffy coat is really strange :o9581

If anybody knows what this is I would be very interested to hear.

Fabby, as it looks like a dog rose bush I would suggest it is a parasite known as the rose bedeguar gall, Robin's pincushion gall, or moss gall. :up

Thank you Horus, I hadn't thought of a gall. Definitely looks like one, poor plant it is covered in them :(

Definitely different. Couldn't even guess what it would be.

You do see lots of different Galls on shrubs and trees the most common being the Oak Gall, there is even a variant that attacks Birch trees and creates those 'Whitches Brooms' that you sometimes see that look more like an old birds nest made of twiggs nestled in the branches, when there are no leaves on the tree they are more visible. ;)

When I first saw the photo the immediate thought that came to mind was "lychees" or "Landons" although I have no idea why I might have thought this was that. I also thought of Witch Hazel but again have no basis for thinking it (just what came to mind when I initially saw the photo).

That may be because a close relative is a 'Rambutan' which has a very spikey outer peel and looks similar to the bristly rose hips in Fablux's photo. ;)
