Walk About the House

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Went of a walk about this house this evening - camera in hand. All the plants are doing well and coming along nicely

These are my efforts out front

9108

9109

9110

Bergenia

9111

This is called "Lewisia" here. It is a succulent and flowers for quite a long time in a variety of colours. Course they sold mixed so you can only know what colour you're getting if it happens to be blooming.

9112

My peonies are doing really well. This one is red. Can't wait 'til it blooms!

9113

The pieris are leaving out nicely. I have a couple different kinds but I like the "Mountain Fire" with the dark red leaves best.

9114

My apple tree. Shhhhhhhh......BUT.....I planted it just behind my fence so the picture is a bit wonky as I was hanging over the fence trying to get a shot of it as I didn't bring the keys to unlock the gate. I kept it all last summer in a big pot but I figured by last fall that is was rapidly out growing the pot so I went out and transplanted it this past winter. It has been doing well and now that it is all budded out am thinking it is going to do fantastic. Not sure I'll ever get any apples off of it as #1 there is the walking trail right below it so passersby can grab and apple if #2 they beat the birds, raccoons and bears to them.

9116

9117

9124

9125

This is my gooseberry bush. I planted it at the base of the retaining wall that went in in hopes of helping hold the soil and cause I really do like gooseberries.

9126

This is the back of the house. Not sure I've ever shown this in a picture anymore but up top is the deck I'm standing on when I took the photos of the trees covered in snow.

9120

My veggie garden. Got the tomatoes in, lettuce is doing well, peas (not so much).

9118

Rhubard is already going to seed.

9119

My latest efforts on the back deck. Instead of planting little plants into these pots that I have to water all the time I've planted SOLAR LIGHTS. Quite a nice effect at night and doesn't look overly bad during the day either.

9121

Not the bowl on the LEFT but the other 3 are pottery bowls I made for hen & chicks. They're really not deep enough BUT good enough if they're not full hot sun.

Wow! All looking good LLL. Our hostas have suddenly taken off, I would have the patio full of just hostas and ferns but Mrs H likes a bit of colour. Will plant up the pots in the next few days.

Foxes Grandad? When I had foxes the only slugs I got were a few little black beggars in maincrop potatoes. They loved damsons too. :ni: The foxes not the slugs

LLL thank you so much for posting pictures of your beautiful garden. Enjoy it for me too, I would so love a garden - but I'm lucky in having so many window sills. :up

So far I haven't had slugs invade. The hostas are all about the front in pots on cement surround by gravel so unless there is a Christopher Columbus slug they aren't trekking that far afield to my hostas (but I do know that slugs can make a mess of them)

The sharp gravel helps to keep them away :up

The slugs in my back yard live in the gravel, like coming in the house and sliding over carpet and suede boots, anything goes. :(

I must say I've never seen virtually dry slugs before. Usually you can track a slug quite easily, but not these blighters they are weird. I saw one on my kitchen ceiling once. :o

I shall have to do some research on this subject. :tk

Today was doing a walk about of my bird houses. Got the last one put up (nailed up). I think you've all seen most of these before but this is my latest 'walkabout'

Most of these are meant to be more ornament than functional as they're too much out in the open but there is a family of sparrows in the one under the maple tree.

Re: Walk About the House

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Did another walk around the house this morning. The poor clematis finally bloomed. Anybody have any idea which one it is? I also say poor cause when I moved in it was planted against the back corner pillar of the house, had never been staked up so was growing on the ground. I was going to have the place painted so it got dug up and moved and planted out back. Next season it had hardly cracked the ground when it got moved from one corner to now. Then that fall it got dug up again when the guys built the Allen block wall below it. It struggled but survived and finally bloomed. My 'plan' (maybe hopefully) will be to have to ultimately stretch over and connect to the bird house post (but then that might not look terrific either so will see but if has FINALLY bloomed!)

9191

9192

9203

Veggie garden is doing well. Carrots, beets, lettuce (3 pickings so far) and tomatoes now flowering. Beans are up too but not in this photo. Peas kinda lagging but they might produce.

9202

Gooseberry have a few berries. Not enough for me to do anything with them other than eat 'em!

9201

The peony is opening. I bought 3 on clear out (all double pinks I thought) and this one is a Japanese variety as it isn't the full big double blossoms but pretty none the less. I have a red one but it only has 1 bloom this year (again it has been planted, transplanted and moved a couple times so I'm luck it is alive)

9200

Not sure what rhodo this is but nice bush and nice flowers. The other rhodo has no flowers at all this year even though I picked off the dead flower heads.

9193

See the big ceramic pot? That is what I potted into this past weekend. That bush was sitting in a plastic V shaped pot. Easy enough to get out of that container but I had to chisel down the top to make it slightly smaller so I could push earth past it into this ceramic pot which is about 2X as high so now there should be LOTS of earth for this guy (who is very gorgeous flame red in the fall) to continue growing.

9196

These guys are just other flowers

9195

9194

This is just a comparison to the picture when I started this thread to show how big the hostas now are. Slugs haven't found 'em "yet"!!
