Prunes!
To me my breakfast is not complete without delicious Prunes.
Fashions change and they seem to have gone out of favour. I've found that local shops don't stock dried prunes, but the big stores have some nice pitted soft prunes in a sachet - expensive though.
Yesterday, I was browsing in the little shop next door when, as I passed the baking section I saw a tin of Prunes! They were only one fifth of the price of the fancy ones, true they have stones, but immersed in apple juice they are so delicious I want to eat a whole tin, which will actually last me nearly a week - but I know that isn't a good idea.
I can't help wondering why they should be in the baking section. Apart from a leg of lamb, I wouldn't use them in baking, so any ideas?

Re: Prunes!
Stewed prunes and custard.......they will keep you going.
Haven't had prunes for ages but I do like them. I usually have some fruit with my breakfast but they don't have the same effect....

Re: Prunes!
I like prunes also MD, but like you say they are expensive when packeted as a baking ingredient, I remember when you could buy a large bag of dried ones and just soak them yourself. As for the logic of supermarket shelf filling, well who knows what logic they apply? In my local Tesco they have a dedicated section for Rice, there is every variety and type you can name from packets of Uncle Ben's to brown rice grown on the slopes of the Himalayas, but try looking for pudding rice. I searched high and low before finding it with the breakfast cereals

Re: Prunes!
The tinned prunes in apple juice - 27 pretty closely packed in a tin were 84p in the Co-op. I think that is very reasonable.

Re: Prunes!
That's not bad, I often buy the same in Tesco, must check the price. At the moment I am a big fan of their own brand tinned plums at £1 for a large sized can with maybe 16 or so big juicy plums per can and best of all they are still firm and not soggy.

Re: Prunes!
I don't think in all my days I've ever seen prunes packed in a tin of apple juice. Not saying they're not out there but I don't think they're here.
We get prunes now in the bulk food section with all other dried fruits (mango, raisins, blueberries, cranberries, pineapple, apricots etc) where you can scoop out however many you want. Used to be able to buy them pre-packaged by the pound/kilo but I haven't seen prunes in that section (with the raisins) since forever.
Grandkids here won't eat them, I like them but don't eat enough to warrant me buying them so haven't actually had prunes here for quite awhile.

Re: Prunes!
LLL, here in the UK we get a lot of tinned fruit that is in apple juice, it is a better alternative to the usual label that will say “peaches in syrup” or “in light syrup” more healthy and less calories.

Re: Prunes!
I rarely buy tinned fruit but when I do "heavy syrup" isn't stopping here. We do get lots of dried fruit here. Some of it is heavily sugared (not sure why at all) but most of it is just dried fruit. I have to say I do love dried figs. They're one of my favourites.

Mecould resist the blurb?
Basically they are just those fancy snacking prunes rather than everyday stuff.

Re: Prunes!
But apparently they aren't pitted, so there's about half a kilo of stones, so I shall resist the advertising and stick to my tins.

Re: Prunes!
I've tried the Tesco tinned prunes and they are very similar to the Co-op ones - except the pitted Tesco prunes are a really vile mush. I threw half my breakfast away, Ugh!
However, Princes pitted tinned prunes without any juice are superb, a delicious treat and the best of any kind I've tried so far. Mmmm.
