Canadian Thanksgiving Today

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Today is our Canadian Thanksgiving or Turkey Day as it is commonly known and true to the name I'm cooking a turkey. The crew is coming over and the son-in-law is going to service the furnace too! He did the same thing last year so it is becoming a bit of a tradition.....Thanksgiving + Furnace Service.

Rather a rainy blustery day. Dark and not looking too appealing out there but mostly I'll be in the kitchen anyway. Definitely NOT running out to any of the store last minute if I can help it.

The daughter is bringing a traditional pumpkin pie. I used to like them but lots of work boiling down the pumpkin and throwing in spices, making the pastry and then baking it all. This time of year pumpkin is IN everything - pumpkin scones, pumpkin lattes & coffees - a veritable world of pumpkin everything.

Back to the kitchen. Stuffing making time so I can get the bird stuffed and into the oven. I do usually cook a large turkey 22 - 25 pounds cause I definitely do not mind having all the leftovers but this year the largest I could find anywhere was 12 pounds. Debated buying two but wasn't sure I could cram two into my roaster and didn't want the bother of serial cooking.

EVERYTHING is done (I think) and now just sitting and waiting for the crew to arrive.

I mentioned turkey day to Roy yesterday, he said he'd never heard of it but, if he was still there I'm sure he would have, hope you had an enjoyable evening with family :)

In Newfoundland ANY day can be a special day with all sorts of good eats! I do believe Newfoundland is stereotyped as the most gregarious and friendly province of all :) Course in Newfoundland too the actual FOOD might not have been turkey only - it could also include moose, deer, seal and other meats ;)

Chicken wings are very popular in all the Pubs here. Different pubs will feature different type of wings on different nights and afternoons. Personally I like going to the Quarterway Pub for 'dry garlic' chicken wings OR 'honey BBQ' wings. Neither are spicey HOT but both are delicious ;)

I'm pretty sure Roy loves the "dry garlic" & the "honey bbq" also anything that has spicy taste :)

Some Pubs here specialize in "Buffalo Wings" which are super super HOT. I don't like them as I don't taste anything really only HOT so my preference runs to actually being able to taste a flavor vs just tasting HOT.

Me too, I hate fiery food that burns your mouth, I would much rather taste what I am eating ;)
"Buffalo Wings" isn't that what old actresses on TV get? :D

Quite possibly.

There is a bit of Bar culture (drinking alcoholic bars) here that goes along the line that IF you're a REAL man you should be able to eat REAL HOT WINGS as in the HOTTER the BETTER. This has lead lots of the Pubs here serving spicier and spicier wings that just burn your lips off AND that is BEFORE you even touch them to the chicken wing. Seems more than ridiculous to me.

Dry garlic, Honey BBQ (really sticky but VERY tasty) are my style.

We have the same stupid mentality with curries, the hotter the better even if it does fry your taste buds. :stp

I had to laugh with Roy the other day when he was telling me not long after he started the job one of the men in the office asked him if he wanted to go out for a "dart" pronounced "dort"............I guess by the look he gave him he had no idea what a "dort" is, so Roy told him that we name dort here " a fag ".....then the man replied " you don't want to go around here asking anyone where to find "fags"

Ha Ha I'm sure those who have travelled well know what it is ;) :)
