Well, 30 odd youngsters completed the challenge! We all feel SO proud of them! All back home now, probably to make up on lost sleep! :up

It's been so dark the last couple of days that I have to have the light on most of the day. I feel like I'm hibernating! Not so cold though, just a bit nippy.

Unfortunately it seems that my replacement Kindle Fire has now died and won't re charge. This has been my constant companion for the last two years, since I had my first one replaced for the same reason. Looking at Google it seems this is very common at about 2 years. I think it's dreadful of Amazon to happily sell addictive games which can be played on non Amazon devices where they may be saved in the event of a device crash, but if installed on an Amazon Fire cannot be saved to transferred to another device. It's true that only one copy of their games can be stored on any device, but I can't transfer my favourites. :(

That's one way of making money I suppose.

The Indian summer continues. Temperatures low to mid twenties today and cloudless sky. What is happening to the weather? A succession of storms coming across the Atlantic, devastation in Florida; even severe flooding in Majorca. But the south east of the UK continues to have the best of the weather, long may it last ;) (Cue comment from Horus  )
I have just been to get a newspaper and I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to be mobile and independent. I have recently thought about getting a larger scooter but at least for now, I will stick with my small one on which I can go just about anywhere, and certainly to places other scooters can't get.
When I was doing the family history stuff, my mother emerged as living the longest in my tree at 83 years and 300 days. I have just done a count and I can claim 83 years and 304 days so I am now top of the pile

Horus I am not sure if you can change the battery on a Kindle Fire.
I do have an SD card in mine and things that I would not want to lose are stored on there.

As Grandad suggests Amazon are far too canny to allow that, but I like your sense of fun Horus. :up

I have music, photos and I think books saved to Cloud. I will check again but at the last count I couldn't change my game which is currently about level 174 and taken me two years to get there. It's my therapy, that's my excuse.

Thanks for the link Pat, :up I have never yet found a device that I could not buy a replacement battery for and also a YouTube video to show you how to do it, so I was surprised when MD and Grandad thought it was not possible and laughed at my suggestion, obviously if it were not possible I would have not suggested it. :| Granted it can be a bit fiddly as often you need a special tool to prise the case apart and sometimes the battery is stuck in place with an adhesive and you need to ease it up, but quite often the replacement battery comes with a small kit that includes the prising device plus any small screwdrivers required although they will be of cheap disposable quality. Granted you usually require good eyesight or better still a magnifying lamp and nimble fingers, but the actual task is often quite simple, but if you are not nimble enough yourself then get a young relative to do it. Alternatively look up one of your local (usually Asian) mobile phone dealers and take it in and I will bet that they can do it for you quite cheaply. ;)

Horus, I certainly did not laugh at your suggestion. I paid £49 for my Kindle Fire HD on Black Friday last year, and at that price I thought it most likely that it would be sealed. At least I will now know if my battery goes on the blink. Thanks for the link Pat. :up

I'm feeling a bit sheepish, because what is available has moved on in the last two years. When the previous Kindle died 2 weeks after the warranty lapsed Amazon sent me a new one anyway. They are now half the price of this one with a higher spec so it's not all bad news.

So Sorry Horus I owe you an apology.

I've found where I can get the battery should it be needed - but having tried for 2 days to get the thing to charge quite suddenly it did! I suspect that there is something loose inside, for it went flat remarkably quickly before the previous charge.

Thank you all for the good advice, I'll get the appropriate tools anyway, just to be prepared. :up

Grandad, not so many things are sealed as they used to be, in this disposable society we are used to stuff just becoming junk once it dies. Most stuff can be prised apart and the only thing 'stuck down' tends to be the battery with a bit of silicone like you get on the back of a new issue credit card so it usually peels off if you do it gently. The biggest risk is often the flimsy connector strip, but often that is on the battery and only needs to be connected to the terminal inside. The art of taking them apart is to gently prise the joint with the soft tool (which look slike a small jemmy bar) and work along a little at a time going aroumd the rim, at some point it will usually pop open. Work on something flat and soft and if possible under a desk magnifyer lamp, replacing the cover is usually just a case of lining the two parts up (carefully) and applying gentle pressure to snap them back again. You obviously avoid putting pressure on the screen of a tablet or a phone and only press evenly on the edges, be aware that some phones (i-phones) have a couple of very tiny screws at the base that have to be removed first, but if you do a YouTube search for almost any device I will bet that someone has uploaded the method.

@MD, no need to aploogise, I would not get the tools 'just in case' as like I said some offers will include the battery and the tool kit, they cost next to nothing to make. However in your case it may be just as well to look into a local phone repair/dealer and enquire if they could fit you a new one and at what cost. They will do it in minutes and if say you have supplied the battery it will probably only be a few pounds. Do you have any of those little market type stalls inside of a shopping centre that often spring up selling phones? they can often do that sort of thing for you.

I bought an original Kindle (now I think called a "Paperwhite" probably 8 or 9 yrs ago and it it is still going strong. Then I bought an original Kindle Fire probably about 5 or so years ago and it is still going strong and recently I updated to a larger Kindle that I could attach a blue ray keyboard to that I can use when traveling (instead of lugging the laptop) and I have never had 1 minute of trouble with any of them. I've also bought them 'on sale' - like Black Friday sales for the daughters and theirs are fine too.

I buy lots of books (all for FREE) on Amazon but I can also find ALL of these titles on my Amazon account on the laptop so - IF you have a laptop and if you go to your Amazon Account on there I'm pretty sure you'll find all your purchases and from there you can re-send them to different Kindles you own and/or bring them up on your laptop.

Guess I'm saying they should not just be gone and disappeared back into cyber world.

And - my last suggestion re: CHARGING you KINDLE - buy another wire to charge it. I would suspect that first.

Sometimes too where you insert the end of the wire INTO the Kindle it can be a bit tricky and fiddly and if you don't get it pushed exactly right all the way in properly then, of course, the Kindle won't charge.

Just my thoughts re: Kindle as in my own experience they're 100%+++ top notch. Wouldn't live without one. I copied and even bought the same case that Grandad has for his ;)

Today I'm sitting home waiting. Late last night the son-in-law's Dad was admitted to ER. Doctors are suspecting his kidneys maybe failing and/or there might be something with his prostrate (basically Doctors don't know but all his blood levels are way out of whack). I may get the Grandkids today if the son-in-law and daughter have to rush to hospital.

Wasn't going to go too far anyway but will now hang closer 'just in case' 'til they can figure out what is going to happen. His Dad underwent a hernia repair about a week ago but since coming home he hasn't been doing well at all and now re-admitted back to hospital. Doesn't sound good and not knowing is worse than knowing what is going on.

The Daughter's Father-in-Law has now been admitted to hospital pending he will see a Specialist Monday (no specialists are available here weekends). Nobody seems to have any other updates on him - blood work way out of whack, kidneys seem to be shutting down and he is dehydrated and about 1 week post hernia surgery so ??? Not sure what all tests they've done on him since he got to the ER either. Our hospitals are not flush with technicians or specialists so worse case scenario is getting ill on a weekend. Hopefully this will all be something simple and he'll be up and running again soon. I'm not sure his exact age but I'm thinking early 70ies somewhere so definitely not old. I will hopefully get an update from the daughter later today.
