Re: What are you doing today?
If I was in charge of the world I'd have education free to end of High School (as it is now) but technical colleges also Free for one or two years beyond as well.
Here if you apply for welfare on coming out of High School you can get it and if you have a child you can get a pretty reasonable dollar amount which many of the built in welfare lifter do.
I'd like to institute a 1 or 2 year period of time whereby you can get FREE continued Education in Trades or Technology (i.e. X-Ray Technician or even NAIL technician). If you do NOT do this you do NOT get welfare for 2 yrs post High School which means it is work or starve or get some level of Trade. Mostly my thinking is to make it easy to acquire some skill so you CAN work which ideally means you're not on the Public dole.
There is a certain group here with a certain mentality whereby they hang in school usually living with their families until they can start to collect welfare which is their top goal. They have absolutely no skills or work ethic (which is kinda a different area to this) and are pretty unemployable. I want them to at least have a skill in an education plus apprenticeship something so they actually do get the get up in the morning and actually DO something experience. Leave this group with 10 plus years or until they are early 30ies having never done anything and IMO they now never will.
Problem here is that tuitions and all that goes with it i.e. filling Admission papers etc is just too much for some and while they're smart enough they just don't ever get beyond High School. I want to extend High School so that the Schools actually arrange the Certificate/Diploma/Work Experience.

Re: What are you doing today?
Yesterday (Sunday) me and the twins went to the first Exhibition Hockey game of the season. Wasn't bad but wasn't good. You could tell some of the players were very new and this was their first game on their respective teams. First period nobody scored but lots of stopping of the clock and time rather dragged. Second period out team scored two goals and the other team one. Final period 30 seconds before ending another goal was scored to a tie.
Went into overtime which is now configured totally different that the period was 5 minutes long with only 3 players each side getting to play. First score broke the tie which happened approximately 30 seconds in. Much better way of ending the game than getting full period times that go on and on.
Was quite surprised at the number of people there watching but then again hockey is the national passtime so I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised.

Been a bit busy this last week as I was called out of retirement (again) to do a little design job for a friends company, so now I am busy re-designing some derma abrasion equipment for you ladies to use, under trained therapist operation of course.

@H - I love the electric Derma abrasion thing I use on my feet. Can't remember the name but heels as soft as a baby's bum (well almost)!

This machine is a bit more complex LLL, it is more like a small sand blasting device that uses very tiny abrasive crystals to remove skin flakes, usually on the face.

Re: What are you doing today?
Trying to think of a reward for my Grandson who got his first GCE result yesterday. He had been really fretting because the first exam was Spanish and the class was divided into two groups. Native Spanish speakers would take the exam a year before those with Spanish as a second language.
He was the only person in the first group who did not have Spanish as their native tongue and really fretted.
He got an A* and was still 14 years old when he took the exam. I really hope that will give him a bit more confidence and stop his worrying.

He has done really well getting that grade, tell him to stop fretting with marks like that he should be proud of himself.

An A is an A is an A and is definitely something to be proud of. It is not everybody who can master a second language and at 14 yrs that is pretty impressive.

Re: What are you doing today?
Went swimming with all the Grandkids today. Water slide was on and that is a particular favourite to come zipping down and around. Went for lunch afterwards and then over the a Plant nursery where I got another 6 lettuce for the garden. Hopefully they'll do well through the fall. Pulled up a bunch of carrots and they've grown really well with an average lengths of 6 to 8 inches. Super tender and don't even need to peel the skin off. Got all the onions out and drying too. None were huge but all have done well and managed to reach 3 to 4" in diameter.
Started watching "El Chapo" on Netflix. Interesting character but so far although this is interesting I liked "Narcos" better.

Re: What are you doing today?
You have been busy LLL, I am still busy with my little design task then I must get the caravan sorted out for next month when I nip off for a few days with my son for a short break (long weekend Friday throgh Monday) in lovely Betys-y-Coed in North Wales. I am also having another visitor for the next two weeks when my daughters dog (Marley) comes to stay while they are on holiday in Morocco. They were let down by their usual sitter due to family circumstances, so as I did not want to see him put in kennels I told them to bring him here instead.
I have already watched the 'El Chapo' series and quite enjoyed it especially as the last series was all dubbed in spoken English. I am sure that the earlier series were all English subtitles, so I don't know if your version is still like that or if they were all updated to spoken English. The 'Narcos' series was based around Pablo Escobar a Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist whilst 'El Chapo' is based upon Joaquín Guzmán who was a Mexican drugs lord.

Re: What are you doing today?
Well today I shall have my first ride for about 2 months on the scooter. Daughter and SiL want to go over the river to pay a visit to Ikea, lots of bits and pieces there in the 'Market Place' not least in the electrical section. That means Swedish meat balls for lunch.
BTW, I ordered yet another soundbar yesterday from John Lewis. This model is a year old and cost £700 originally but with promotional discounts is £279 (clearing stock I guess). The new'ish TV is excellent but as with all these new slim models, the sound is poor. This will be the 4th soundbar we have tried including a Bose but based on its original cost and reviews this should be good. It has 9 speakers and no separate subwoofer.

Re: What are you doing today?
It's been a really busy Summer for us here and it hasn't finished yet. My workroom is almost totally transformed. Just got two more shelves to go up this weekend. DH's youngest sister is paying a visit on Wednesday, bringing her new partner for family approval, so after that, I must settle down and get some work done. I have decided to give up my twice monthly craft club, and specialise on just quilting, although while we were clearing out a cupboard, I came across a lot of yarn, so I might have to get another knitting machine down from the loft, and knit some garments. We are also going to be looking for a mobility scooter for me too over the next couple of weeks, and I really must apply for a blue badge! It's never ending, is it?

Re: What are you doing today?
Indeed it's not! I've designed the new Grannie Annex, but unfortunately it turns out to be a generous 2 car not 3 car garage. Hmm
However, all is not lost. There is a lean-to against the depth of building on the left hand side which houses the water pump for the villa (not reliable and due to be replaced) so DD has agreed to using this space for toilet/shower room and next to it mini kitchen with access from the inside of course!
Her handyman asked if I wanted a verandah? He's been reading my mind.
Now I would like an opinion on the flooring. The floor at present is sound clean concrete - never actually used for cars just storage. Of course all the walls the roof and floor have to be insulated before decoration.
Question 1 The handyman said the floor will have to come up. I said leave the present concrete and raise the level above the drive, as the garage is almost on the lowest point of the slope. It will also cut down cost I should think?
Question 2 The walls are single brick, the roof is supported internally on posts about the size of telephone posts. Handyman is looking to cover these posts which he admits will reduce the size of the interior. I quite like the idea of keeping the posts exposed and insulating between them. I'd do the same for the roof and leave the beams exposed, to me it gives integrity to the building and respects it's origin.
What would you use for insulation, please? I'm grateful for any opinion.

Re: What are you doing today?
Generally speaking a Polystyrene sheet of a decent thickness is the most practical for walls and floors as unlike fibre fill insulation materials (Rockwool etc.) it will not track damp or water up the material if it did get exposed to water or damp in some way. It can be obtained in various forms and is used to 'dry line' the single brick wall by either fixing it directly to the wall or onto battens so as to create an air gap. If fixing directly you would use a foil faced board to act as a water barrier, all boards then need an opposite face that can be plaster skimmed or decorated. On a concrete floor I would think that putting down a plastic membrane sheet and again fix battens (but use fibreglass ones) on top to raise the floor level and then fix an insulating floor board (in sheet form) onto the top would solve your problems.

Brilliant Horus! We are on the same page. Thank you.
I have used all you suggest at some time or another except the floor boards in my old DIY days. Nice to have back up.

I like the idea of leaving beams and posts exposed too. We don't get too many options re: insulation here. Pink fibreglass batting or rigid board or (in ceilings) blown in fuffy stuff
