Re: What are you doing today?
LLL that is why we still plan on spending winters in Egypt. We had to unexpectedly stay in France last winter because Barry needed surgery but can't face another European winter. Apparently it was the worst winter anyone could remember, but as it was our first winter here it certainly didn't inspire us to repeat the experience!
MD that is a shame

Re: What are you doing today?
Today I'm working trying to get my workroom back in some sort of order. We have been totally re-organizing the house and I would like to have it finished by next week if possible. A month in a mess is enough for me! Still, one good bit of news today - second to youngest brother went into Guys & St. Thomas's on Thursday for a triple heart bypass and he's coming home today. Also took youngest brother into hospital for another procedure, but he should be ready to be fetched this evening.

Re: What are you doing today?
Has it made a big difference MD? the reason I ask is that after 50 years in Engineering my own hearing is pretty poor, problem is I never liked things in my ears, even going the baths used to do my head in using ear plugs. Did you get them private or is there a National Health route for things like ear tests?

Re: What are you doing today?
For some time I had to ask people to repeat what they said, especially the family and watched the text on TV, but thought the family were mumbling and the TV - well.
I was quite happy I live a pretty solitary life and had no problem day to day. My daughter who went deaf in her left ear last year and in spite of seeing several specialists in Ibiza, wasn't really getting any help. So when she came to the UK she went to Specsavers who now do hearing tests and aids. She made me go as well, but I said I was fine so we came to an agreement that I would let her pay if I needed a hearing aid though I was pretty sure I didn't need one.
I was wrong. I got my hearing aids today and though I will need to get used to wearing them it makes a huge positive difference. I'm sitting here now and can clearly hear the others talking in the kitchen two rooms away. My daughter is thrilled with hers, though she will never regain the same quality of hearing that she had before we cab walk on her affected side and talk to her now without her constantly turning her head and finally asking us to walk on the other side.
My daughter said the hearing test was free. I wasn't put under any pressure by the audiologist to buy a hearing aid, he just gave the results and said that in his opinion I would benefit. If my daughter hadn't insisted I wouldn't have bought one, but I'm glad she did it for me.
The appliance is tiny and very discrete almost invisible in normal life.
I don't know about the NHS routes I'm afraid.

Yes the last time I had anything to do with them was for my mother and I think we paid about £3000 for them

Re: What are you doing today?
Mine were middle of the range, "invisible" and nothing near £3,000 for a pair. Specsavers supply 2 units, they don't sell one, as the chap told me if you only have one eye that's short sighted they don't sell you a monacle! So either you have one and a spare or a pair
I think the first hearing test is free.
I've looked at their website and they supply NHS devices - possibly free.

I was curious because the old NHS ones used to be dead clunkey whereas my mums were quite small

Re: What are you doing today?
Today I was shopping and essentially frittering away time going to different Antique stores here but didn't find anything that appealed to me at all. I saw one blown glass paperweight I considered but I guess it just didn't appeal to me enough and while I love blown glass paperweights I already have about a dozen so 'why' would I need one more?
I also saw and liked and carried around for about 15 minutes a fluted rim milk glass hobnail Fenton vase. Not sure it was real Fenton but close enough and I'm no expert and basically I like milk glass but in the end I put it back as it is/was pretty close in design to another milk glass vase I already have. Scored zero in the cutesy unique finds.
Then I went to a bakery I've gone to for years that makes the best scones - 'cept they were super busy and totally sold out so I had a three berry muffin. It was 'ok' but nothing special so I drank my lemon water, read for a bit and heading back to the hotel where I am now and thinking about going down to the Lobby to get a wake up call logged in so I'll be up and on the road for the morning Ferry home.

Re: What are you doing today?
Horus, I can help with information about NHS hearing aids. I am almost totally deaf and use two hearing aids. Firstly, you need to go to your GP, who then has communication with the audiology clinic. You would then be sent a letter from the audiology dept. to attend for a hearing test. This is extremely thorough and then they would decide how much they can help you. I have two hearing aids as I said; one digital one and one full 'in the ear' one. I can't have two digital ones because I've had three ear operations on my right ear, so the eardrum has been perforated. However, the 'in the ear' one is moulded to my ear shape and size and isn't much bigger than the digital one. They both have a thin tube which runs from the ear to a small 'box' which sits behind the ear and is hardly visible. Digital ones need checking every 6 months, but the other ones can be cleaned and re-tubed at various centres close to you. The batteries are also free. A hearing aid battery last approx. two weeks. This is all completely free on the NHS. The only snag that I can see is the time between the first appointment and actually receiving the equipment. It can take months, depending on your particular local hospital and how busy that dept. is. All it takes is an initial visit to your GP though. I'm very happy with mine, especially having been deaf since I was a child and no-one noticed until I was in my thirties. I can't begin to describe how I felt when I heard music in stereo for the first time and birdsong! I cried! I hope this info helps.

Just a footnote to my earlier post. I've checked up on the Specsavers site and, although they advertise NHS hearing aids, that is a slight exaggeration. If your local NHS is not a member of the scheme, then you have to go through your GP. Also noted that the cheapest hearing aid they do is £485.

Thanks for all the info folks, all very useful to be honest I don't think my hearing is that bad. more a case of turning the TV up a bit and some speech being hard to hear especially if accompanied by music.

Re: What are you doing today?
On Monday afternoon my youngest daughter suffered an unprovoked attack by her lodger's cat.
She was eventually admitted to hospital late that night with obvious infection. Next day she had the first operation under GA to drain and clean the site. Yesterday she was moved to a room of her own, on a drip with her heavily padded arm suspended.
Today she is due to go back to theatre for a more invasive treatment with a plastic surgeon as part of the team as the main wounds are on the inside of her right fore arm where there are lots of tendons and nerves serving the hand.
I have never felt more helpless as a mother, but even if I could get to her, what could I do? Thank God it isn't worse for one thing and that she is getting skilled professional treatment. The other thing is also thank God for the mobile phone which she is allowed to use. so we are in touch with her pretty much all day.
Never ignore cat bites, always get antibiotic cover asap. I was seriously mauled a few times in quantine kennels and in Vet practice - had treatment a lot of swelling but nothing like this.

We both have the same moan. I think the music bed on a lot of tv programmes and films is intrusive and muddies the speech. Our Samsung TV has various sound modes including "clear speech" which does help a bit. Trouble is the sound bars do not always have that option.Horus wrote:Thanks for all the info folks, all very useful to be honest I don't think my hearing is that bad. more a case of turning the TV up a bit and some speech being hard to hear especially if accompanied by music.
MD, I do hope your daughter recovers completely. I know cat bites can be really toxic. Fran's mother had one from a neighbours cat years ago and it left her with permanent tendon damage.

Re: What are you doing today?
Oooh that sounds really nasty, lets hope it all gets sorted pretty quickly. I was only ever bitten once by our house cat while trying to hold her as my dad cleaned a wound on her leg. My thumb swelled up to twice its normal size and I had infection pouring out for days, the problem with cats is that they make a punture wound that doesn't look to bad on the surface but they are deep and full of germs.Mad Dilys wrote:On Monday afternoon my youngest daughter suffered an unprovoked attack by her lodger's cat.

I have a sound bar and the same on my Smart TV for various sound options, but some programs are just so poor sound wise that nothing will fix the problem

Just got a message from my daughter:
WooHoo! Looks like the infection got washed and cut out and I get home today! #sohappy
PS I'm still slightly bewildered by the use of # these days.

Delighted to hear that MD, it's such a worry when you are in different countries from family when a crisis occurs.
