PS I made all our own bread and butter, sometimes ice cream too.

No wonder my children remember me as being crazy, I was and maybe still am.

Last weekend we went to the north Kent coast for a lunchtime snack. The north coast in general runs gently to the sea which at that point is the outer Thames estuary.
Today we went to the south coast, less than 30 miles across the county, where the coastline is mostly chalk cliffs running from east of Dover, through the Seven Sisters in Sussex and on to the Jurassic coast in Dorset. Our venue was a little cliff top cafe called, what else but, The Cliff Top Cafe. Little places like this are often referred to a 'Greasy Spoons' but this little place was spotlessly clean with an equally spotless toilet facility.

It was a very dull morning (the clouds cleared opening up blue sky AFTER we left :( ) but there are good views from its high vantage point.
This is looking east towards Dover which is just a few miles along the coast.
8367

And this is looking west towards Folkestone; the western arm of Folkestone harbour can be seen projecting from the coast.

By the time we got home there was clear blue skys and wall to wall sunshine. :vs

Sunday 14.20 ordered new stock of Nespresso coffee pods.
Monday 10.26 order delivered to my door (from the West Midlands) :up

How can Royal Mail compete with these independent delivery companies?

Basically they can’t Grandad, when it comes to parcels the courier services beat them hands down. I have an Amazon Prime account and everything I order direct from them will arrive the next day, I recently ordered a Fleecy type jacket from a company that sent it via Royal Mail, it took about 7 days to arrive. The problem is that although Royal mail are rubbish with parcels they do perform a very good universal service with standard mail delivery and unfortunately the private companies would not be interested in taking over this universal service and would just cherry pick the best bits and then overall we would all lose out.

I know it's International, but I sent my Grandson his birthday present in the smallest official GPO box well in time for his birthday, or so I thought ;)

The Post office said 5-7 days. It arrived at the weekend two months later without any kind of explanation. Now we aren't sending presents through the post office if we can do it through Amazon - they do have a Spanish base which is just as efficient as the UK one it seems. :up

I do agree Horus with what you say. Royal Mail parcel force do offer very good fast delivery services but at extortionate prices. We ordered a smart stick stand from Amazon the other week. I don't have Prime so delivery was about £4. It arrived in 2 days FROM BELGIUM. :up

Now what am I doing today? well I decided to take part in the 'Great Wasp Survey' sponsored by the Royal Entomological Society that was featured on this weeks Countryfile program. It involves making a trap from an old plastic bottle and putting some beer in the bottom to attract them, which of course gave me a good excuse to swig the rest of it ;) I have been issued with a unique trap number which I will empty in 7 days and then send them off to the people doing the survey. :up

When I re-hung the cloakroom door a week ago, I used a little Black and Decker tool box/workbench as a stool when cutting the lower hinge rebate. This scratched the floor so this morning I sanded and re-varnished it because it was becoming a bone of contention ;)

Miserable afternoon so I went back to a bit of family genealogy. About 6 years ago I put into book form all that I had found out about my own and my wifes family. I had it produced as a book by Blurb and had just one copy printed as a reference for when I returned to the subject.

In the meantime I have found some errors and my intention is to review all that I have and to add as much as possible. I can then edit my original at Blurb and perhaps have most up to date copies printed for the family as a Christmas present. So, plenty to do for the next couple of months.

@Mad Dilys MD, one of my errors involved a place called Capel. I had wrongly assumed that it referred to Capel le Ferne near Folkestone. It transpires that it is Capel near Five Oaks Green in mid Kent, an area I believe you are familiar with. ;)

What I'm doing today is "NOT sweating" coz I'm not venturing outside into HOT SWELTERING HEAT. We were somewhere over 30C when I woke up and it has only gotten hotter since then so I'm watching TV & how North Korea exploded a hydrogen bomb that was like a 6.5 magnitude earthquake which has stirred the Americans into high level meetings. On the other hand I'm considering calling the daughter to see if she wants to venture out over here for some tomatoes from my garden............all high level activities today.

Yes, Grandad, I know Capel very well indeed, my first fiancee lived there! (Before you ask, one of many Grandad. :D )

The little church there is famous for it's stained glass windows, being the only church in the world with all it's windows created by Chagal.

I spent about 4 hours in PC World yesterday afternoon :( waiting to see the Tech Support, having 3 chaps examine sick laptop, then browsing the multitude of pads, netbooks and laptops.

The end result was that a mature assistant who talked sense, gave me hope that a friendly nerd (or a nerdly friend) might be able to remove the hard drive, which might or might not be saveable as an external drive.

However, if the hard-drive was replaced - at a cost of about £160 plus labour then the device might well be better than new! :urm:

I really liked the little netbooks that were shooting off the shelves into the students baskets and cost under £200. However I couldn't see that anything with a max of 32GB storage was going to work for me, As the senior assistant pointed out Office alone would take up most of that space.

One by one I dismissed models that were too heavy, not enough battery life, useless folding and dismantling keyboard from screen, and finally glossy screens and ended up with a basic model at about £500 plus about another £200+ for basic programmes and set up after lots of discounts.

I need a reliable computer, the netbook I'm using to write this is one of the best and most reliable devices I've ever had. It cost just over £200 has survived a lot of international travel and being dropped by a customs officer cracking hinge and breaking a corner off the case. :x Unfortunately it is 7 years old, running on Windows 7 :up but unfortunately doesn't have the ability to download some of the applications that I want to use. :st

I was so spaced out by the time I left the shop that I can't remember the exact model I've bought! I know it is 14.5 inch non reflective screen and has the new USB sockets as well as the ones I'm used to. It has modest but sufficient memory and a year's free access to cloud for storage. All being well I pick it up later today. :a20:

The Luddite in me is beginning to show........... Bring back paper and ink, shelves and files, please.

Looks like you have made a good decision :up and didn't this friendly Nerd tell you a while back that you could remove the drive in the old laptop (no big deal if you are scrapping it) and then just use it as another USB drive? ;)

A long standing American friend of mine was over this week to attend a conference and as he usually does he calls in and stays over and together with another mutual friend we socialise and go out for a few meals and of course a few beers, :br a typical lads night out. We had already been out on Monday night for traditional Balti meal as it is one of his favourite venues when over here and we were to go again last night. Unfortunately I had not felt so good and although it was not food poisoning or anything like that I had finished up with a delicate stomach the next day, so decided not to risk eating a curry again in the same week. I phoned my mate to say that I was giving it a miss, but would join them later up the pub and so that they could enjoy a drink with their meal I would drive them both there and pick them up again after.

So on that basis I prepared myself a nice Cauliflower Cheese bake with a mustard and Paprika sauce and topped with bacon lardons ready to go in the oven later for my dinner. At around 2 pm I had a facetime call from them both as he was at my mates house for a chat, it was then suggested by our friend that he should cook us all a meal instead of them going out without me and as he originated in the Southern state of Louisiana he would make us ‘Shrimp Creole’. I decided to take my Cauliflower Cheese bake as a starter so we would have a long slow dinner with him preparing the main meal.

My mates wife was away for the day so we were left alone in her brand new high tech kitchen with appliances that none of us including her husband had a clue how to operate. It turned into lots of laughs as I would call out “Alexa, what is gas mark 5 in Centigrade?” then struggling to set the dials on her new oven correctly. Eventually after a few beers we got to eat my starter as our American friend started his preparation to the strains of our air guitars playing the tune Duelling Banjo’s from the film Deliverance (a dig at his Redneck ancestry).

phpBB [video]

Eventually he got to grips with a modern induction hob that kept switching off every time he moved the pan and he worked his magic with the shrimps which were really Tiger Prawns and combined them beautifully with the rest of the ingredients which he served on a bed of rice and it was delicious, :eat on his next visit he says he will cook us up a Gumbo, so looking forwards to that. :up

We left the mess for my mates wife to find the next day :up and headed off to the pub which my friend now considers to be his local after about 30 years or so of visits. So a good time was had by all and some great food with great company, he is now winging his way home, probably nursing a bad head.

Well H it sounds like you boys had a great night in. And you are surely not serious that you all walked away and left the dishes? But I suppose a womans place is in the kitchen. I have already taken shelter to avoid the brickbats
Why did I think or assume that when you told us you had a new mobile, it was a Samsung? Which iphone DID you get? Good job you put your new friend Alexa in your pocket or you might still be there working out all the gadgets.
Great to hear you had a good evening with good friends :up

PS: Hope your friend avoided Irma and Jose on his way home. :a82:

I spent some time today following up on my wifes tree. She knows absolutely nothing about her maternal line and her mother never spoke about her early life. MD may be interested in this which is a summary so far of tracing back from her grandfather. All of the family lived in mid Kent, an area that MD is very familiar with. I have included this MD because there are many addresses mentioned but all within a few miles radius.

This is the only photo of her grandfather and grandmother. We wondered about the medal on his chest and I have tracked that to the South Africa (Boer War) medal with Transvaal clasp. So that explains his absence in the sequence of censuses.

Still got a lot to do but if we get many days like today, I shall have plenty of time :(

That will keep you busy all through the Winter Grandad. As to the phone, well it is an I-phone but I have had it for a few years now, so not a new one, we were actually calling out our questions to Alexa on the Amazon Dot device as my mate has the same ones in his home that I have. Now did we walk away and leave the dirty dishes? well ............................ we did need to get to the pub ;)
