Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
The Terrier Christmas card from Petershead looks cute
The bud on your amaryllis definitely looks bigger - thicker than mine. I'm thinking my flower might only have 3 blooms to it cause it isn't really plumped out - BUT - never know 'til it actually opens!

Comming along nicely Kiya, but those will not be flowering by Christmas more like the early Spring I predicted before, depending how warm they are

No don't keep them in the dark, they will just go yellow and they will thrive best on a sunny windowsill.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
I'll have to take another photo of my amaryllis as in just the past couple of days I'd say the stalk has grown about two more inches. No more appreciable growth on the one leaf stalk or the other bud but now suddenly the actual flower stalk has put a move on in high gear to reach for the sky!

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
My amaryllis has gone crazy! I took a photo of it yesterday but I haven't had a sec to download the photo. Yesterday it was 21" high!! I wish I'd measured it before but the top in the last photo I posted was on about par with the top of the candle. It is now probably 5 or 6" higher.
I don't know how much higher it'll go before opening (no signs of opening yet) but it is definitely in a growth spurt!

What are you feeding it on?
I just hope you haven't got it under an old bucket like when they 'force' Rhubarb.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
On Dec 4th (6 days ago) I took a photo that showed my amaryllis to about the same height as the candle. (Wish I had measured it then)
On Dec 10th I took another photo and measured it and it is NOW 21" tall! Growing like crazy! And you can even see how much the second flower stalk has grown in 6 days too - Gonna get some pretty nice looking flowers for Christmas (I hope)
Just a photo of the measuring tape.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
LLL, not that I am jealous (cause I am ) but I suspect that like your Christmas Cactus your Amarillis is not getting enough light and is being 'drawn' and that is why it is growing so fast. Be carefull that it doesn't get too leggy and unable to support itself.
It should look more like this with lots of leaves and the flower stem keeping within proportion to them, then staedily getting taller as the flower head developes and then opens.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Yesterday I measured my amaryllis and it was now 25" high!! YIKES as that is about 4" in 2 days. Will measure it again tomorrow.
There are 12 big windows in this room so I'm not sure it is actually reaching for daylight. It isn't really leaning in any one direction but it is definitely growing.
Personally I think these plants are so modified and so prepared to grow that soon as they hit earth they just sprout like crazy to flower. The 1 leaf is negligible but the 2 flower stalks are just growing to beat the band. I think so much energy in the plant is put towards flowering they have nothing left to grow as a plant. Believe me I've tried for years to get one of these plants to grow and flower again and nada. Absolutely nothing. I can't even hardly get them to grow as there seems to be nothing left once the flowering is finished.
I think YOUR amaryllis is growing much more naturally than this one is.
Even this secondary flower in 2 days reached 8". If you compare it to the photo of just 2 days prior you can see how fast it has grown

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Yeah I sometimes think I am. I really think the ones they sell here and they are definitely BIG sellers as people kinda wait for them and grab them as soon as they arrive are totally prepped to grow and flower. No leaves and not much else just one large flower.
I do really like them and the flowers are magnificent but they're really not like too much of a regular plant. I see your amaryllis as being more 'normal' with leaves and stalk. Definitely this one is growing FAST

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Well - I took photos of my first amaryllis stalk (now 28" high) and the second stalk which is now 16" high and the 1 leaf which is still totally stunted between the two stalks - BUT - when I went to resize them I see that installing Windows 10 has totally eaten and disappeared my photo program where I re-sized, cropped etc. AND the program that Windows 10 IS providing does not have a re-size!! It has just basic tweaks I'd never use it...........
I've always re-sized my photos before putting them on here - anyway - I'm not happy my photo editing ability is gone but my amaryllis is still going skyward however the bud has cracked and a tiny tidbit of light red is seen on the crack of the bud........
Need to go and look at this new program to see if I can get the old one back..........UGH!!

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Okee dokee so I went back again - third or fourth look was a charm! And I did see a tiny icon UP on the top of the middle of the screen that let me open up other programs so I was able to get my photos re-sized and on here.
This is the top of the tall amaryllis - one long stalk 27/28" high (was trying to hold the tape in one hand and take the photo with the other)
This is the second stalk now 16" high
And the first flower bulb is now starting to crack open. No sign of leaves though - the original leaf between the 2 flower stalks is still there about 3" or so high.
