Words - Special and Invented
Have you ever invented a word? I'm not sure I have but I have adopted and incorporated into my own speaking words phrases and words I'd heard other people use. Some people have invented special words that are more descriptive and sound more appropriate to what they are describing than the common language words we all use.
Special words to share?
Right now words or I should say semblances of words are flying out the 2 yr old Granddaughter's mouth - everything ends with N. DadN, MomN and, of course, we're not all copying between us adults saying all the names and words she is saying with the "N" sound. Not that we're letting her hear the mis-pronunciation but it is cute.

Re: Words - Special and Invented
My daughters and I found out recently that we do have our own words, courtesy of my grandson who wanted to be taught our "language". We do also use old fashioned words, just liking the sound, didn't even realise we were doing it.
In a recent text my daughter asked "would you have about your person, perchance?" So no text shorthand between us!
Also we miss pronounce but I've noticed usually when we are together - so "Ociffer" "Ambliance" "Flutterbye" and lots of Spoonerisms when the beginning of two words are switched.

My wife and I would also use the word "Flutterbye" and "Alavanche" instead of avalanche, but my favourite and we always used it was "Scrirrel" instead of Squirrel, due to the inability of our very young son to say the word properly, I still use it today.

I think it is when children are learning to talk that you do get some interesting interpretations.
Our oldest grandson, whose dad is a big motor sport enthusiast, could never say the word 'chicane'. His version was 'k'shane'
A word that I hear used by the black community is 'arkse' instead of 'ask'. I guess this must be deep rooted because I hear black people of all socail standings using arkse!

Re: Words - Special and Invented
My late husband when about 7 yrs old would say "I have to call it Ickle Spade because I can't say Trowel"
I had a very bad lisp until my teens (elocution lessons fixed it ) so words like shoulders and thistles filled me with dread.
However, now I can say "Sister Suzie shifts and sifts six sacks of sand!" with ease

Re: Words - Special and Invented
My youngest daughter was born with 90+% hearing loss. She didn't speak much at all as a baby and when she did she lisped. Speech therapy corrected her lisp which was cute on a 5 year old but wouldn't have been so cute at 30.
We still regularly eat "Anamans" (bananas), P. T. tatoes (potatoes) and Phishgetti (spaghetti) which also came from the kids when younger and learning how to pronounce words.
I'm not sure I'm incorporating all the new text speak into my verbage (and don't want to) but the odd word might be slipping in these days.
Going to school we were always told that language is a dynamic ever changing entity. In French speaking Canada "Franglais" is a very phenomenon which is the mixing of an English word with a French word or modern computer word.

Re: Words - Special and Invented
This thread is headed Special and Invented and a couple of words that are 'special' or 'personal' to us are Tiffin and snifter....both used in a jokey manner.
Tiffin Time, we use close to its Indian roots when we feel it is time for a light snack and a drink, particularly when on holiday.
Late afternoon each day at around 4.30 we usually have a sherry or a G & T with a few flavoured potato crisps, and this is 'Time for a Snifter'

Re: Words - Special and Invented
@Grandad - good words. I've never heard of the word "tiffin" but 'tiffin time' is an easy phrase. Maybe I'm so inherently lazy I actually even like to use easy words. Words that are easy to say and mean something. Good ones
I'm not aware that I've ever invented any special word. I know that there are a few words I use i.e. "shmoozle" or "schmooz" for things being a mess but I have no idea where I ever got this word from especially with it not even being an English word. Must've heard it somewhere from somebody, had it mean something to me so I subconsciously worked it into my verbage.

The girls and I frequently use "Huzzah" or if specially pleased and delighted "Huzzah and Hurray"

Re: Words - Special and Invented
Grandad starts his G&T a lot earlier than I do, mine is usually around 9pm unless it is a nice day and I am sitting outside. One tall tumbler filled about a quarter full of London Gin, add a good handfull of ice cubes, two thick slices of wax free lemon and fill it up to the top with Schweppes Indian tonic water with Lemon, (4 for £1.50 at Tesco) luverly

Re: Words - Special and Invented
It would be louverly H but do you make it special by using special aka crystal glasses or does this time become mundane with regular water glasses?
I tend to like a special drink IN the appropriate style glass but I know, for example, my mom and dad always just used their water glasses vs wine glass when they drank their glass of wine with dinner.

I do have some nice crystal glasses, but rarely use them if I am drinking alone (which is usually the case) although guests do get to drink from them for wine or Whiskey. As to the G&T glasses, I prefer a plain tumbler type glass as I like to see the bubbles on the Lemon

Re: Words - Special and Invented
My Mom and Dad would drink their nightly glass of wine in short water glasses. Personally I just like drinking wine in a wine glass. Doesn't have to be a fancy wine glass at all I just like them for wine. Just wondered if the glass was used to fit the drink
