It came across to my attention as a TV news item - parents in the USA (Tennessee) have named their child "Messiah" and a Judge has ordered them to change the child's name. No details as to how or why this came to the attention of a Judge but the issue that is now emerging is - do parents have the complete right to name their child and can they be ordered to change it?
The Judges rationale is that there is only ONE Messiah and that is Jesus Christ hence the court order.
The parents are arguing their right to name their child whatever they want - AND AND AND - statistically the name Messiah is the FOURTH FASTEST growing name in popularity in the USA
Guess I was more than surprised that any parent would name their child a name that could cause life problems. Don't parents when naming a child ever consider the implications and ramifications of how a child has to cope through their life with the name? Ridicule, taunts, goofy comments - all the things that putting a difficult name onto a child cause this child/person through life?
The other issue though - if parents name their child an inappropriate name (think the great evil persons of the world) should courts aka gov't intervene?
