April Programs at the Clinton School for Public Service

Listed below are the lectures slated for April at the William J. Clinton Graduate School for Public Service in Little Rock, Arkansas. I'm listing them here because not only can you attend for free if you are near LR, all of the lectures are available in their entireity online the day after the lecture. Each lecture is one hour long, including the question and answer period.

If you want to atttend in person, even though the lectures are free, reservations are required because space is limited. All lectures are held in the foyer of the school except in cases where an overwhelming response causes them to move the event to the Great Hall at the Clinton Library or the nearby convention center.

The school regularly offers free lecture series by thought, opinion, social and political leaders centered around the theme of public service.

Monday, April 6, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Vital Voices is a nonprofit women's organization which invests in emerging and established women leaders who are working to help women in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East.

James Rogers, president and CEO of Duke Energy, in partnership with the Arkansas Public Service Commission
Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- With nearly 20 years of experience as an executive in the electric utility industry, Rogers was named president and CEO of Duke Energy following the merger of Duke Energy and Cinergy in April 2006.

Joseph Nye, "Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics"
Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Joseph Nye, a professor and former dean of Harvard's Kennedy School, is the author of "Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics," among other books. He has served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Chair of the National Intelligence Council, and Deputy Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science and Technology.

Steve Hannah, CEO, The Onion
Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Steve Hannah is CEO of The Onion, a popular satirical newspaper that publishes "fake news" and commentary on current events and entertainment.

FRANK Release Party
Monday, April 13, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- The Clinton School will unveil the second addition of FRANK magazine, a thematic publication that reviews concepts and ideas in public service. This issue includes pieces featuring John Lithgow, Yao Ming, Marie Tillman, Bob Woodruff, Jerry Springer and more.

Barry Wellman, "Connected Lives: The New Social Network Operating System"Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- The S.D. Clark Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto, Barry Wellman is an expert on social, computer and communication networks. He will discuss the social effects of the Internet and how the Internet fits into people’s everyday lives.

Will Pearson, president and cofounder, mental_floss
Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Will Pearson is cofounder of mental_floss, a bi-monthly magazine that presents facts and trivia in a humorous way. Pearson and his friend Mangesh Hattikudur first published the magazine while they were students at Duke University.

Allan Kellehear, "The Social History of Dying"
Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall) *Book signing to follow
- A professor of Sociology at the University of Bath, United Kingdom, Allan Kellehear will discuss his book, "The Social History of Dying," a two-million-year journey through the social history of death and how ancient ideas have shaped how we view death today.

James Carse, "The Religious Case Against Belief," part of the Arkansas Literary Festival
Friday, April 17, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall) *Book signing to follow
- Religious scholar James Carse will discuss his book, "The Religious Case Against Belief," which argues that "belief" has corrupted religion and spawned violence around the world.

Michael Dukakis, former Governor of Massachusetts
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Michael Dukakis is the former governor of Massachusetts and 1988 Democratic presidential candidate who was defeated by George H.W. Bush. Since June 1991, Dukakis has been a distinguished professor of Political Science at Northeastern University and visiting professor at the School of Public Affairs at UCLA.

Edoardo Zaffuto, cofounder Addiopizzo

-Edoardo Zaffuto of Italy is cofounder of Addiopizzo, a movement established to build a community of businesses and consumers who refuse to pay "pizzo" or Mafia extortion money.

Dr. Phil McGraw
Monday, April 27, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- Dr. Phil McGraw is the host of "Dr. Phil," the second highest rated daytime talk show in America. The show has been making headlines and breaking records since its September 2002 launch, when it garnered the highest ratings of any new syndicated show since the launch of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" 17 years prior.

David Western, founding executive director of African Conservation Centre
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (Sturgis Hall)
- A wildlife conservationist and activist, David Western will give a Clinton School lecture titled "Who Owns Wildlife?" about the gap among local, national and global interests related to wildlife preservation.

Jonathan Alter, Newsweek senior editor
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at TBD (Sturgis Hall)
- At Newsweek, Jonathan Alter has written the widely acclaimed "Between The Lines" column since 1991, examining politics, media and society at large. He covered the past five presidential campaigns and has frequently interviewed American presidents and other world leaders.
