Favourite things

Post by Grandad »

I expect, if we give it some thought, we all have things that we use daily and that make life easier or more enjoyable. My wife often mentions a few things as her 'favourites'. The power shower in the bathroom that gives her a lift each morning, her cordless Dyson vacuum cleaner that is light weight and can be used throughout the house with no trailing lead, her ipad to keep her up to date with the news as she can no longer read a newspaper, and finally the airing cupboard in which I fitted rails so that whatever the weather drying is not a problem (we have never owned a tumble dryer).
Although our last car was the smallest we ever had, we just loved it but sadly it had to go about 3 months ago. I have always been 'hands on' and have a small workshop full of power tools. For safety reasons I can't use any of them any more but my favourite tool was always a router. I have 3 and they are a complete workshop in one power tool.

Here are three examples of things I made entirely with a router.
A small corner table (the legs are stair spindles)

A small side table to match two larger ones (everything done with router)
8882

A curved architrave when I made a curved doorway from hall to kitchen.

Right now I like my computer although I am hving more difficulty seeing the screen properly. I am just down to one camera now but the X10 meets my needs. I am not a mobile phone addict like most young people, I just have PAYG without data but as long as there is WIFI nearby I can do all the internet stuff. What I particularly like is that if I don't have a camera with me, pictures on the phone are very good and so easily 'bluetoothed' down to the computer.

So what sort of things do you folks have that you regard as favourites in your everyday life?

Grew up without running water and the water we did have was not consistent so now I totally love being able to flush and take long BAths. Dishwasher and washing machine are pretty important too. Quite enjoy the microwave for instant heating.

Quite enjoy the camera and laptop and Kindle.

If at all possible I must have a down filled blanket for night sleeping.

All the above followed by my plants.

I have a little gadget that I take for granted but is in fact very useful.
Our lounge extension has a table lamp in each corner and no centre lights. The table lamps are all on sockets that I control with a small remote.
It is so convenient when watching some TV programs to just switch off all lights and turn the lounge into a cinema.

On the subject of TV's, we have just a 40" Sony about ten years old and are thinking about getting a new larger one. Space is a bit limiting so 50" will be the max but, like Horus's, it will be smart, wifi, android, 4G, and UHD. Just a matter of what brand to choose but I will probably stay brand loyal to Sony. Whatever, that will be a new 'favourite thing'

After further thought, I have realised that my Kindle Fire which I take to bed to watch television and play myself to sleep with a Queen triple album.

Also my newish laptop spends a lot of time with me every day.

Not so many years ago I would have said my car. I miss the independence terribly, but parking is a nightmare in this city. :(

I would definitely miss my Fire tablet and Kindle, I've used my Fire every night since I got it over 2 years ago watching stuff from Netflix, BBC I player, Yahoo, mostly drama's and anything historical.........and of course my computer/desktop :) :)

I don't think I have a particular favourite thing - apart from my potato peeler! My son brought it back from Australia back in 1999, and it's a tungsten one. The times it's been thrown out with the peelings! Then I have to go through the rubbish until I find it! :)

Interesting that Kindle Fire is rating so high in favourites. I also bought one before Christmas when they were offered at £49.99, what a bargain. The best tablet I have had (never had an ipad, only my wife has one of those but she has more expensive tastes ;) ;) )

There's a funny thing! I never thought of my iPad being a favourite thing, because, to me, it comes under the heading of 'necessity'! Well, I suppose it would be as it's almost permanently welded to my hand!
