Sri Lanka revisited
Before Christmas Robbo and me exchanged reminiscences about visits to Sri Lanka. As a result of that I retrieved my 35mm negatives from the loft of our visit in December 1997. With the miserable recent weather I scanned them with the intention of posting some on here. However, as I would need to post quite a lot to give a flavour of this very green island, I instead put a selection from them on utube as a slideshow.
I attempted to add an ambient audio track from the utube library assuming it would loop for the duration of the slideshow....utube doesn't do that so I suggest you either turn off your sound or turn it very low. Please play full screen. This is a very rough slideshow with no commentary, just 13 minutes of 'holiday snaps', but I hope they will give you an idea of what this beautiful island is like......

Didnt know it was so green there, loved the photo of the women picking tea in the huge tree field. Did wonder about the men up poles by the sea . . Very funny, after your video ended the porn sites appeared . . . .

Re: Sri Lanka revisited
Don't know about any porn Jay, must be a Utube quirk.
Yes Sri Lanka IS very green. They do have a high rainfall and centuries ago vast reservoirs (tanks) were created to store water for when the rains failed.
The tea plantations cover the hills in altitudes up to about 7000 feet around Nuwara Eliya, the centre of tea production.
The men on the poles are the famous stilt fishermen. They sit up there on a protruding peg and fish with rod and line. They seem to object to being photographed but there is not much chance of them coming down and chasing you for 'backsheesh'

Re: Sri Lanka revisited
Lovely photos Grandad. I was going to ask about the 2 men sitting up the poles too but already asked and answered.
I like the pictures "between destinations" and the buffalos pulling the carts. All the different shots of people just doing regular people things are always the most enjoyable.
Can tell these photos are from the "good old days" when you could still get a shot of an Airline Captain and Co-Pilot!
Elephant shots were nice too. That baby elephant feeding on the bottle looked pretty hairy!

Re: Sri Lanka revisited
Thank you folks. Just whiled away a few hours (well quite a few ) as Sri Lanka had been discussed recently.
LLL, we are unlikely to do any more long haul holidays, that is anything over 5 or 6 hours to us. If we did, we would go to India or South Africa again. Both destinations we really enjoyed.

Super super photos Grandad
Loved them all especially the elephants
Couldn't help noticing the name of the tea plantation "Glenloch" sounds very Scottish

Re: Sri Lanka revisited
Glad you like the pictures Kiya
Scotland may well have a small population but Scottish men seem to pop up all over the world in recent history. I am sure the early days when Sri Lanka was British Ceylon would have been no exception. Indeed the first British Governor in the late eighteenth century was a Scot.

You know what they say about Scotsmen Grandad "They are everywhere else in the world, singing about how good it is in Scotland"
