A Photo Challenge
This picture was posted on an FB Canterbury group trying to locate where the Veteran Match seller was sitting in 1928. It is possible that the location was destroyed in the blitz or has been cleared during rebuilding parts of the city.
What would help me most is if I could decipher the inscription on the cast iron black 'box' on the wall just down from the top on the right of picture. I am appealing to Horus principally but if anyone would have a go I would be grateful. I already have an idea what some of it says but nothing conclusive. Thanks
PS. You need to turn it back 90 degrees. I turned the pic on its side so that I could upload the biggest file possible.

Re: A Photo Challenge
Sorry Grandad, I have tried a few ways of enhancing it, but unfortunately it is very pixelated and I would only be guessing.
To me the top line looks like a name such as 'Swinnertons' or 'Smithsons' and the last line looks something like 'Queens Head' ? but as I say purely guessing as it is almost decipherable had it been a bit sharper, is your original image any better?

Re: A Photo Challenge
Thanks for trying H The original file is only 300kb and it uploaded at about that size. I think the top line is the name of a company. Middle line their business and the third looked like Sons Ltd. But I agree probably not possible with certainty. Thanks again.

Re: A Photo Challenge
Not really H. I just had another look. I think the box thing is a collection box. It has a slot in the top. I think the five letters at the top are RSPCA and the bottom two could be Cats & Dogs. Even if I am right it does not help YET ;-)

Re: A Photo Challenge
Geez - I've stared and stared at it and can't make out anything and I've sized it up as BIG as I can make it but couldn't even begin to guess what it says. No help from me at all.......BUT let us kow if you get it figured out. Be interesting to know what it actually does say.

Re: A Photo Challenge
All I can see ? is the bottom line first word, first letter may be a J--S then a second word.
I could be wrong though

Re: A Photo Challenge
I am pretty sure that the box is a collection box for the RSPCA. That doesn't help in any way though. Another chap on the local FB group is also trying without success.
Thanks for trying folks, our best hope is a local historian who has just about the best collection of local postcards and other documents of anyone....

Re: A Photo Challenge
Just to close this off, the location of the old gent has been identified. It is just to the right of the black door in this Google Maps image. Just a few minutes from where I live.
My thoughts about the collection box are no longer important BUT next time I am passing I WILL look for the fixing holes in the bricks.

Re: A Photo Challenge
I'm amazed that those iron railings survived the war years and now I want to know what that square sign says

Re: A Photo Challenge
if you look at the bricks about 10 up from the railings, the markings on the brick looks like a fat mans face. in the recent pic not the original
Dont get your knickers in a knot. It solves nothing and just makes you walk funny
