Official: Egypt ready to block porn sites

Post by DJKeefy »

Egypt is ready to start blocking pornographic websites, as the mechanism used for blocking these sites has been ready since January, said Sherif Hashem, deputy head of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority.

“The companies providing Internet service in Egypt have installed filters in their networks since January to block any content demanded by the judicial authorities in Egypt,” Hashem told Turkish news agency Anadolu Sunday.

Dozens of Salafis demonstrated Saturday in front of the High Court in downtown Cairo as part of what they called “the youth plan to block pornographic sites.”

Hashem demanded that concerned authorities specifically define what websites should be blocked so that the government can ask Internet providers to block them.

“There is no such thing as blocking such sites as a whole, but they must be specified,” he explained.

In November, the former prosecutor general sent official letters to the communications and information technology minister, the interior minister and the head of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority ordering that they block pornographic websites.

The Cairo Administrative Court in May 2009 ruled that the government should ban pornographic websites. The court said such websites help spread vice, which destroys traditions, beliefs and morals, and therefore the country’s interests, as well as social and national security.

Experts estimate the cost of the networks’ new mechanism for blocking pornographic websites at about LE25 million

These sites are vile with some of the lewdest, crudest sex acts available, unchecked, on the internet. Yes I Have looked in on some of them and actually find them utterly boring. But I have teenage grandchildren ans want to know what they could have access to.

In the UK you just have to tick a box to confirm that you are over 18 years of age. Any ten year old can do that and his mind will become damaged from what he can view. Is it any wonder that boys as young as 12 years have been guilty of rape?

A million miles away from our knowledge of sex when I was a lad, but I won't bore you with that. :nn

I suppose the freedom of the individual comes into the equation. Is a complete ban on such sites not too draconian. The alternative of preventing under 18's from viewing is very difficult to apply. Perhaps some form of pay to view with ones age confirmed by possession of some form of credit card could be an answer. But even that does not stop younger persons looking in???

Perhaps on balance, ban the lot. They do nothing but harm, much the same as violent computer games in my opinion. :xx

Mmm, :urm: while I may agree that such sites are rife on the net and sometimes they will pop up in the most simplest of searches and while I may agree that they should be regulated in some way so as not to be accessible to children or others who would not wish to view them by accident, but this type of blanket restriction does concern me. It is not been done because of a general consensus by the population demanding that it should be banned, rather it is being done because a certain section with a religious dimension wants to control what you have access to. It is in effect a way of censoring what you may or may not read or access via the web, distasteful as it may be to some it is still a personal choice that they freely make regardless of how others may view that choice. My concern would be what else these self imposed guardians of other peoples morals will deem unacceptable to themselves? Will it be the expression of free speech, will it be reading political articles? To me this sort of censorship is the thin end of the wedge, far better that they campaign for a better regulated internet than to block certain sites that may offend them, we may all agree in principle with this particular move, but will we agree with the next one they decide to ban? 8)

Well my personal opinion is that these sites with their depraved vile little videos should be consigned to the shady sex 'clubs and cinemas' for sad old (and not so old) men in dirty raincoats to pay to view.

Just get them out of general internet circulation. :xx

What is classed as porn though?

In the Egyptian eyes they see things like take a break magazines and holiday brochures as porn (anything that is showing more skin than just face, hands or feet)

If one goes by an Egyptian definition of porn one might not be seeing anything much.......

On the other hand whilst I've never opened a porn site I can or can't only imagine what is on there. I worry about blanket regulation but something should be done so kids are not necessarily coming across these sites. Other than saying that I wouldn't have a clue how to regulate anything in cyber world.

Are you saying DJK that if they Google 'porn' they will not get a list of sites requiring no subscription, with a menu list of 20 or 30 categories showing the most sordid sex acts imaginable????

If so then you would seem to already have some kind of control in place. And I would be pleased if that is the case.
