Gosh! I had forgotten the orange concentrate, it was vile. I remember having a big argument with my sister over the colour of bananas. She said they were green - she had seen one. I said I'm sure I read they were yellow. I suppose I was about 6 or more before I got to eat a banana.

Pretty much until the 1950s by Uncle who was in the Navy and stationed in Malta used to send us food parcels - I remember tinned peaches and tinned cream. I hated tinned cream, wasn't too fond of my older sister either and felt quite smug one day when my mother saw my sister with the empty cream tin and about to put her finger in it again to clean it out. My Mum stopped her by saying "Don't do that the dog's already given it a wash" :lol:

I recall that orange juice concentrate being rather watery and with no sweetness at all.
Your story about the banana reminded me of my daughter who was about 4 years old at the time and we were visiting my parents home after returning from living in Africa. My mum had given her a pear out of a fruit bowl and she sat at the table with it and asked mum for a spoon. My mum looked puzzled until I explained that she had never seen a pear (the fruit) before and thought it was an Avocado pear as they grew on trees in our garden where we lived abroad.

I loved the orange juice! It was sold at the baby clinic along with the National Dried baby milk and malt/oil! Nowadays, it comes in a larger bottle under the name of Sunquick - or it was a few years ago. The malt and oil is still on sale in Boots but I haven't seen Virol for an age.



p.s. The bacon pudding was very tasty, but I cooked it in the electric steamer. I think I prefer the saucepan of water way. Cottage pie tonight.

National Dried baby milk, I remember the big round tins it came in, remind me again what Virol was :tk

Cottage pie sound good :eat I have just cooked Annie 3 sheeps hearts (1 per day) and they smell very nice. As for myself it will just be a baggette roll with some very nice roast pork as I am off up the local tonight and don't want to feel bloated ;)

Virol was almost the same as malt and oil. Have you ever thought of cooking the sheeps hearts for yourself, Horus? If you stuff them, they're delicious. Also ox hearts or bullocks hearts, sliced and casseroled or roasted whole make a good meal too. :eat

It has crossed my mind a few times, I do also buy Ox hearts and then cut them up and freeze them in portion sizes for Annie. Years ago we would have stuffed heart at my Nan's house and I remember it being very tasty, the problem is they are far too big for just myself although a sheeps heart may be ideal. :tk

A common mistake to say they're testicles! They are actually the thymus glands - and they taste wonderful! :lol:

Yum Sweetbreads, I haven't seen or had them for years, totally delicious!

So are soft herring roes on toast - but I don't like the hard roes any way.

Well, it's in the oven and I must admit that I'm nervous about it! :( It didn't seem to have much flavoring but we shall see. I will serve it up with a tossed salad - but I will also make sure there is plenty of bread in the breadbin, just in case! :lol:

I had to find a bigger dish, Horus! :lol: Anyway, the dish I found didn't have a lid so I used foil. When I cam to uncover it I discovered a bit stuck to the foil - so I ate it! And now I'm hopeful! :eat

Well, I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised, Horus! I didn't have any pasta shells so I used farfalle; I also added a tin of sliced mushrooms to the mince and half a teaspoon of chilli flakes. DH has gone back for a second helping! :lol:

Well just so long as it worked :up although the idea is that the small pasta shells get themselves filled with the mixture which doesn't quite happen with farfalle as it is a bit on the flat side. Next time try it with the small pasta shells and keep to the original recipe, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. ;)
