Generally speaking you can change your passwords as follows:

For Windows XP do this:

1. Click on START and then CONTROL PANEL

2. Click on the ‘User Accounts’ link.

(Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, double-click on the User Accounts icon.)

3. In the “Pick an account to change” area of the ‘User Accounts’ window, click on your Windows XP user name, which should be the administrator.

4. Choose the "Change my password" link.

5. In the first text box, enter your existing password.

6. In the next two text boxes, enter the new password you would like to start using.

(Entering the password twice helps to make sure that you typed your new password correctly.)

7. Click the "Change Password" button to confirm your changes.

You can now close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel window.

Now that your Windows XP password has been changed, you must use your new password to log on to Windows XP from this point forward.

Instructions for VISTA, do this:

1. Log in to your computer as the administrator. Click the "Start" button in the bottom left corner of your desktop.

2. Type "lusrmgr.msc" without the quotes into the search box right above the "Start" button. Hit "Enter."

3. Type your current administrator password in the field if you are prompted to do so.

4. Double-click on "Local Users and Groups." Hit "Users." Right-click on the administrator account in the list that appears. Select "Set Password."

5. Enter and confirm your new password. Close all windows.

You may also try this:
(a) Press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" keys simultaneously.

(b) Hit "Change a Password."

(c) Enter your old password, then Enter and confirm your New password.

(d) Close all windows.

Or This:
1. Click on 'Start' and then 'Control Panel'.

2. Click on the "User Accounts and Family Safety" link.

(Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the User Accounts icon and proceed to Step 4.)

3. Click on the "User Accounts" link.

4. In the "Make changes to your user account" area of the 'User Accounts' window, click the "Change your password" link.

5. In the first text box, enter your current password.

6. In the next two text boxes, enter the new password you would like to start using.

(Entering the password twice helps to make sure that you typed your new password correctly.)

7. Click the "Change password" button to confirm your changes.

8. You can now close the User Accounts window.

(Now that your Windows Vista password has been changed, you must use your new password to log on to Windows Vista from this point forward.)

Instructions for Windows 7, do this:

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, keys simultaneously and then click “Change a password”.

2. Type in your old password, type your new password, then type your new password again to confirm it, and then press Enter

Hopefully one of these will sort you out. :)

Re: Password

Sorry WI I read your post too quickly and now realise you wanted to disable having to use any password, so try this and remember that in order to disable any passwords you must be logged in as the ADMINISTRATOR and to know the current Admin password.

For Windows XP this should work
Start your computer and log onto the administrator's account. Because it involves system security, you can't use any other account for this operation. Microsoft recommends the following directions for removing a password in Windows XP.
1. Click the "Start" button, then click "Control Panel," then select "User Accounts."
2. Find "Remove my password."
3. When asked for your current password, enter it, then click "Remove Password."

For Windows 7 this should work
1. Find the "Control Panel" as you would in Windows XP. The only difference is that the "Start" button will not have the word printed on it. It will be the Windows icon instead.
2. Click "System and Security."
3. On the next window, click "Administrative Tools," then "Local Security Policy."
4. Find "Accounts: Administrator account status."
5. Double-click on these words.
6. Then click "Disable" on the next menu. Close out all the windows.

This should work for VISTA & Win7
1. Log in and click the Windows icon on the bottom left of the desktop screen.
2. If you're using Vista, type "netplwiz" (without speech quotes) into the box marked "Run."
3. If you're using Windows 7, type "control userpasswords2." (again without the speech quotes).
4. The box is located under the words "All Programs."
5. Un-check the box marked "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer."
6. Enter your current login password in the box that pops up. Find the button marked "OK" at the bottom of the window to close it.

H, if as in Japan, the UK has "National Living Treasures", I nominate you to be thus celebrated! Done successfully, God bless your little cotton socks. BTW, you were right the first time; I want to have one, just changed for greater security. :bl:

Re: Password

Okay, bad news. I'm sure it's me. I am having trouble with the new password. The computer will not accept it straight away. :o I try a number of times slowly and carefully. When I click "Reset password" I get the message I need an external floppy disk or USB flashdrive. There is always the latter inserted, but I remove and replace it and wait till it lights up blue. I have tried this in all 3 ports (that's called grasping at straws). Eventually, somehow, I get on. I am now trying to reset it again, thinking I have made a typo, but cannot believe I did it twice in the "Confirm password" box origionally. It says my current password is wrong, though I have tried it many ways including correctly and deliberately with typos, as the keys on this computer (Acer Aspire One, Windows 7) are a bit sensitive. I am always finding letters don't appear and have to edit. I have included a hint, but that only tells me what I knew. I have taken out and re-inserted the SIM in the flash drive. I am now not game to turn off as I only have the one computer here to ask for HELLLLLLLPPPPP!!!!

I saved your info to Reader and checked it again. It is actually slightly different for Windows 7 to what you had. It is :Start (Windows icon)/Control panel/User accounts/Change password.

When I trid to Submit this reply, It told me ""You have incorrectly sorted the items to the correct list of the confirmation question" which I had not noticed. I have now move the temples from the right box to the left. What is that all about??? Here goes, fingers crossed, metaphorically, as it's too hard to type otherwise :?

Re: Password

Post by Winged Isis »

I just typed a long reply, telling of problems getting my new password accepted, submitted it, wasn't accepted, found I had to do the little click-and-drag test at the bottom, not knowing why, then noticed I wasn't logged on (I WAS so!!! because I have to every time I enter this or the Blue Side on this computer in Egypt it seems) so re-did it and got a "Timed out" message page, then tried again and got on to type this. Computer about to be flung in our fountain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anybody out there? I cannot se who is on right now. Keefy??? I am staying on and hoping my dongle doesn't run out of juice (if you'll pardon the expression).

Re: Password

What a thing to wake up too, my head is spinning.

First of all to Guest, I am not entirely sure you are being serious as we do get a few jokers at times, I have re-read your post a couple of times and you seem to be lumping two problems into the same question. I assume the first part is asking for help on the changing of a password on your laptop/PC and the other is a problem with logging into this site?

To answer the second part first:
Any new member has to have their first posts approved by a Moderator, so until that person (probably myself) sees and reads the post it will not show up, this is done to avoid spamming on the forum or someone just trying to make a one off malicious post.

I have now read and approved your initial post so it should now show up. :up

I assume that the "sorting temples" thing you refer too was when you tried to become a member on this site, if so then that is simply another device to eliminate spamming by web-bots that are machines that can appear human and open up fake accounts, again to perform spamming such as advertisements or even porn being posted. I do not know the actual question you will be asked as these are random, but the question will be something that only a human being can perform. So for example you may be shown four pictures, but only one of them is a fish and the others are all mammals, so you may be asked to place them into the same groups as each other which a none human could not do. This should only happen during registration.

The first part of your question about the password, I can only tell you what the normal procedures are for the various operating systems and you need to make a judgement by what you see on your PC screens as to which instruction to follow. Things may vary from one operating system to another so you may have a slightly different way of accessing certain icons or processes, but the basic instructions will (or should) work. I suspect that when you were being prompted for the Floppy/USB it was because Windows was trying to create a backup disc in case you forgot your password, that may or may not have worked, I have no way of knowing that. It does seem like you have messed up somewhere with this and maybe entered a password that you don’t recall or intended to use, i.e. miss-spelled in some way.

This can be a problem, but you could try the following to try and remove that password and type a new one instead, by following the steps here:

Restart your PC, and hold the F8 keyboard button and as you enter the Windows Boot Menu (when it starts up) you will see some different choices.

Look for the one that says “Safe Mode with Networking” and using your ‘up/down arrow’ keys move onto that choice and select it.

Windows should now run in “Safe Mode”
.
Select the default Administrator account from the login and either leave the password
Blank at first as hopefully it will not have a password set, or failing that try enetering your OLD password.

If you are lucky and you get passed the login, then you should be able to edit your original account.

I would suggest that if you are not comfortable in doing any of this to ask someone more familiar with IT to help.

Finally it is worth remembering that you do not have to set a password on any PC just leave the space blank if you do not want one. It often happens that the old password is still active if the procedure to change it has failed, so always try the old one or even just click next without typing anything into the box.

Hopefully you solve your dilemma.

EDIT: If none of the above works then I suggest that you do not do anything that may erase data from the USB drive that you have plugged into your PC as it may just contain the backup to your password and someone more familiar with IT may be able to use it to get you out of trouble if you take both USB stick & PC to them. You could always try booting in SAFE MODE as described and re-setting your PC to an earlier "Restore Point" this may help if your OLD password still works, but remember that any data or software changes made after the "Restore Point" will be lost.

WI I have noticed that the site seems slow to me, I did ask people the other day but no-one answered so I thought it was just at my end. I think maybe it is that, plus in your case a poor internet at your end giving you additional problems, can only say the usual thing about deleting Cookies etc as that sometimes helps to speed things up a little. :(

  I could not figure out what your problem was, so lets start at the beginning so I don't get anymore confused ;)

Question: Have you succesfully changed your password or not?
Question: If not, then what position are you in with your PC? ie. can you log on and use it? or are you using another PC/Laptop at the moment?

Lets sort the above questions first then we can look at deleting Cookies :up

I'm baaa-aack! Told you it was probably me. :oops2: A big strawberry icecream sundae at Jolie Ville seems to have done the trick. It cannot have been too many letters as Windows Help that gives advice on making a secure password said use numbers and symbols and you can have at least 14 total, and I only had 12. Go figure!? Sorry to make your head spin, but if it is any consolation, so was mine, along with nausea and sweating. :? :sk

Anyway, I have reset again and all seems well, plus the little blue lights are both bright and strong, so the internet seems good, too. :cheer:

Thanks so much for trying to help, H. :wi I am going to shut down now and try getting back in. It's after I turn on my computer that is the problem. If you never hear from me on the forums again, wait for the news of a female and computer washing up on the riverbank near the bridge.

PS: Never underestimate the power of icecream!
