Egypt shaken by 6.4-magnitude earthquake Monday
Quake, which experts say originated in southern Turkey, goes largely unfelt throughout most of the country
Ahram Online, Monday 9 Jul 2012

Awad Hassub of Egypt's National Research Centre for Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced on Monday afternoon that ground stations throughout the country had detected a 6.4-magnitude earthquake originating from southern Turkey.

The tremor, Hassub told Egyptian state news agency MENA, had been detected at ground stations located on Egypt's north coast, in the Sinai Peninsula and along the Nile Valley.

He went on to note that, despite its considerable size, the quake was largely unfelt throughout most of the country.

Hassub added that no casualties or material losses had been reported.

Mmm, makes you wonder why a country in an obvious earthquake zone would want to build a nuclear power station to meet its future energy needs?

I live on the Pacific Rim ring of earthquake zones. Have felt quite a few and a 6.4 would have been a big one. Sometimes little earthquakes pass through here where you feel nothing (particularly if you're walking) but suddenly just notice the swag lamps swaying or see something else suddenly move.

Interestingly just prior to 'us' feeling an earthquake all the cows will lie down. Wonder if camels in the desert do the same thing?
